Random Ramsdom, 3/22: Movement

If today's slate of basketball games turn out to be as one-sided as the games on the dayside yesterday, we're going to need some Rams talk to fill the gaps. Here's a little round up of things to talk about between contests to see if you can stuff more potato salad into your mouth than your obnoxious brother-in-law.

  •  So the Rams like Mizzou DT Ziggy Hoodaccording to this report. What's not to like? Hood's a great player, and a second round pick who might sneak into the first. Say the Rams did draft Hood with their second round pick, how does that alter the d-line? That would give them two starters in Carriker and Hood, but what about a double team trapping NT? Would they grab one of those guys somewhere else? Move Carriker to DE to pair with Chris Long once Leonard Little retires? Always interesting to speculate on the shape of things to come this time of year.
  • The Rams have interest in a QB...other than Gus Frerotte. 6'5" 220 lbs Fresno State QB Tom Brandstater, with a private meeting scheduled for April 15-16. He showed great arm strength and accuracy, and was considered by many to have had the best Combine performance of any QB in attendance. Definitely has the frame of a QB, and could be a steal as he's projected to go in the 4th or even 5th round.  Great pick with low risk, reward potential.
  • Former Rams WR coach Henry Ellard compared MU's Jeremy Maclin to a young Torry Holt.
  • Citing "team sources" Pro Football Weekly calls the Barron-Bell OT scenario a smokescreen. Duh. The source also said that right now, Greco and Incognito are projected as the starting guards, and Setterstrom will push Incognito for playing time as well as being the most likely backup to newly signed C Jason Brown. Smokescreen or not, that doesn't rule out the possibility of the Rams drafting an OT in the second round and using their first pick on Aaron Curry or even Michael Crabtree.

WR

If the Rams went WR in the 1st I think it will be more likely Maclin than Crabtree, he has the speed and PR and KR abilities the Rams want/need and they like him “a lot” as stated in the same report as “Ziggy” Hood

They don't like him enough to pick him 2nd overall.

If they really wanted Maclin, they’d be best served trading down.

All I’m saying is if the Rams went WR with the 2nd pick it wouldn’t be Crabtree because they like Maclin more, I never said they should take Maclin #2, and I talk about trading down to get Maclin here

Maclin vs. Crabtree

Where does it say the Rams like Maclin “more” than Crabtree?

1. There looking for a speedy receiver with some size, the only WR’s they went after in FA were Nate Washington and Brandon Jones, both are fast receivers that are both 6’1".
2. In the same post as Ziggy Hood it says they like him “a lot”; where does it even mention the Rams are even considering Crabtree
3. Why would they take a WR that’s 6’1", slow, and will be out for the next month or two, when they can draft a guy that’s 6’0", fast, and can return punts and kicks.

by Caruso on Mar 22, 2009 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So, it's speculation.

And that’s fine, just don’t say it like it’s a fact. And to be clear, I’m in no way advocating drafting Michael Crabtree. Not in the least bit.

Anyway…

1. There are bigger receivers just as fast (maybe a tick slower) than Maclin available later in the draft.

2. Was Michael Crabtree participating in the Missouri Pro Day?

2 (b). You do realize that’s Jim Thomas who is saying “a lot”. He’s not quoting anyone with the Rams. Also, just because Jim Thomas hasn’t declared the Rams like someone doesn’t mean they don’t.

3. First, Crabtree is going to be healthy by mid-May. Hardly anything to be concerned about. And second, he’s not “slow”. But, even if he’s not as fast as Maclin, who cares? This is why Jerry Rice fell in the draft. He ran a poor 40 and people ignored his pure ability. Besides, the Rams need size not necessarily a speed guy. They’ve got plenty of speed guys the same size as Maclin (in particular, one named Donnie Avery).

Getting two tickets to an execution is like getting two tickets to NASCAR, except you KNOW Jeff Gordon's gonna die.

My Bad

didn’t really clarify when I said where does it mention the Rams like Crabtree I didn’t mean in that post I meant in any post by any expert.
And this really doesn’t even matter that much there’s probably a 1% chance we draft either of them I was just saying I think they would take Maclin over Crabtree if it came down to that.

I see.

Fair enough.

Draft Needs

I don’t think it’s in the Rams’ best interests to add another rookie to the receiving corps. We already have Avery, Burton and Stanley trying to learn all the nuances of being an NFL receiver. Bringing in another rookie would only muddle the situation. I say bring in a veteran like Marvin Harrison or Amani Toomer to mentor the young guns instead. The Rams have 4 of the top 99 picks in the draft and should use those picks to bolster the linebacker, offensive line, cornerback units and then take the best player available in the 4th round. Aaron Curry should be taken with the #2 overall pick and the top offensive lineman still on the table should be taken in the 2nd round. (Unless we wind up trading the second round pick and Marc Bulger to the Broncos for Jay Cutler)

That's not a good argument

If Derek Stanley is blocking the Rams from getting a legit WR talent, he will be cut yesterday. I guarantee, having Stanley on the roster is not going to prevent the Rams from taking a more talented WR in this year’s draft. Bottom line, very few Rams — rookie or veteran — have guaranteed spots on the roster, as has already been shown.

Crabtree

The writer says: “Smokescreen or not, that doesn’t rule out the possibility of the Rams drafting an OT in the second round and using their first pick on Aaron Curry or even Michael Crabtree.” He’s exactly right. There are 2-3 high quality O-Linemen that will be available in the 2nd round. There’s only one Michael Crabtree. With Holt’s career dead and gone, we need an impact WR like Crab as the priority. Bulger may recover some with a mediocre O-Line, a whopping Center like Jason Brown, a blocking back like Karney, and guys like Crab, Avery, Burton and McMichaels to throw to. We gotta do better than 14.5 points a game to win anything. On “D” last season we allowed 29 points per game. The backfield is looking better, but our LB’s except for maybe Witherspoon, are way suspect. And our D-Line is in the worst trouble; 35 yr old Little, ineffective Carriker, and too small Long. Unless some great strides are made by Clift Ryan and Victor Aydenaju, opposing RB’s will be coming through gaping holes and there’ll be very few QB pressures or sacks. Teams with guys like Kurt Warner and Matt Hasselbeck will feast on us.

Taking Crabtree represents the biggest risk, lowest reward

You are right on the money that the Rams biggest problem in the macro view is their points differential. They simply were not competitive last year. That said, we can’t immediately turn this team into the 2007 Patriots with just a first-round pick. It’s all about setting a foundation for the next few years.

There are basically three scenarios for the Rams:

1. Take Eugene Monroe (if the Lions take Jason Smith) — lowest risk, lowest reward in terms of putting points on the board, as we are still shy of a lot of skill talent. But you are hoping to return Bulger to form, keep him upright, and pound with the running game, eat up the clock and maybe move that 14 PPG to a league-average 17. There’s also speculation that Monroe is not a top-flight LT, a Walter Jones or Orlando Pace, but he should be solid out of the gate, and should help the Rams keep the other team off the field for a few more minutes per game. This might prevent an opposing FG drive per game. Long term: We still need to replace Bulger with next year’s top pick, and somehow build a quality defensive middle. WRs that fit Shurmur’s scheme can be gotten cheaply through free agency — the Eagles have never prioritized that #1 receiver, outside of the TO experiment. Estimated PPG difference: +6 (3 offensive, 3 defensive)

2. Take Aaron Curry — high risk, high reward in terms of keeping points off the board. Putting Curry in the middle would completely transform the LB crew from a weakness to a strength. We stop opposing runners from getting to and through the second level of our defense. Our biggest problem last season on defense was the inability to stop the run, and inability to force punts from third downs.

Look at this: even though the Rams gave up 8.28 yards per pass attempt (ridiculous!), 31st in the league, they only gave up 217 yards passing per game (19th). Teams could pass all day through the soft Rams middle, but they didn’t because it was even easier running through it: 158 rushing yards per game allowed (31st). And according to Football Outsiders, the Rams’ pass defense did well against 1st and 2nd receivers, but got killed by “other” WRs – slot receivers that have to be picked up by linebackers in coverage. Adding Curry would completely change this, as it slots Witherspoon to his natural position, where he can be freed to read and react, and help with pass rush from time to time. Points per game impact: I’d estimate that this one player takes 7 points off our defensive points allowed. Long term: The Rams still draft an effective tackle this season, replace Holt next season.

3. Take Crabtree — Huge risk, low reward. The Rams now have replaced Torry Holt with a mouthy, ego-driven wide receiver who is going to bark all year long about how he isn’t getting enough passes because (1) Bulger is always on his back, and (2) the Rams are always way behind, allowing defenses to not respect the run game and go after Bulger, leading back to (1). That said, Holt’s touchdowns fell from 10 in 2006 to 3 in 2008. Crabtree is definitely capable of catching or creating 10, even under adverse conditions. Points per game: Crabtree adds 49 points to the positive side, or roughly +3 per game. That’s his upside. However, he isn’t going to catch enough balls or be involved in enough plays to significantly impact the Rams’ time of possession. No defensive points awarded. Long term: The Rams still have a mushy core, with an unsettled O-line, D-line, and linebacking corps. Despite new playmaking talent, the Rams struggle to show that continuous improvement from drive to drive that the team deserately needs to prove they’re heading in the right direction under Spagnuolo.

Offense

As much as we could use a superstar wide reciever. I agree, adding another rookie to the situation wouldn’t help anything. The Rams need to pick up a veteran, I would go with Toomer, I think he has more left, and would be cheaper. And, as much as I would love to have Curry, I keep coming back to the concept that if Bulger is on his back all day, it won’t matter what WRs we have.

Veteran WR?

We just dumped Holt and the last thing we need is another expensive veteran flop like Drew Bennett. Toomer’s on the downside of a great career. We need youth and speed. Crab, Avery and Burton fit the bill.

CURRY

to me, it seems like a no-brainer… not that WRs are a dime a dozen, but there are plenty of em. a guy like curry is a safe bet, should be good cornerstone in our weak D. some great WRs will be available in the mid rounds. and also i agree about MAC over CRABTREE. sorry tool box
