How Do You Pronounce Spagnuolo?

I've heard it pronounced several different ways.

I've heard it pronounced "Spag-no-low", basically making the ‘u’ silent.

I've heard it pronounced "Span - yo - lo", making the 'g' silent.

And I've heard it pronounced "spag - new - o - lo", making nothing silent.

I’m thinking in Italian the 'g’ is silent like in "lasagna".  Is that right?  Somebody out there must be Italian that can help me out with this.

So how do you pronounce Spagnuolo?

When he introduced himself

I think he said Span-yo-lo. But everyone will be calling him Spag-no-lo so how he pronounces it won’t really matter.

Couldn't resist.

Been reading for a few weeks here. I’m loving it. I actually took 3 semesters of Italian and spent a semester in Florence, so I feel somewhat qualified to field this one.

Span-gnu(as in the other word for wildebeest)-o’-lo would be the closest you can really put in typing. The g isn’t really silent, but it does form a sound as in “lasagna”. Also, the u and the o are both pronounced, but they’d be sort of slurred together. The syllabic emphasis would be on the o, as well. In Italian you pronounce all of the letters, most of the time.

Hope this helps. This is going to be a tough season for me hearing everyone mangle his name all season; however, I’m happy I’ll be able to watch since they hired him instead of Jason Garrett, though.

After going to Italy in January...

I concur. In layman’s terms, it should sound like span-uo-lo, emphasis on the second syllable. The uo should sound like “You” and “Oh” together. And of course the ‘g’ doesn’t get pronounced, making the same sound as “lasagna.” If that even helps.

Works for Me!

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the input. Now if I can just get through this lull ‘til the draft and then the BIG lull to the preseason games.
