Crabtree (Michael, not Ms.)
Hi all,
Just visiting over from Viva El Birdos, the excellent Cardinals baseball blog. Love what's going on here too.
Just want to lament the losses of Torry and Orlando but hope for the best. I believe that once it's all said and done, they will both wear Rams colors in Canton.
Regarding this year's draft: I know it makes sense to draft a lineman, but with Smith's stock dropping I was wondering if we shouldn't seriously consider drafting Crabtree at 2, not only to fill the vacancy created by Torry's departure, but also to prevent the Seahawks from wrapping him up at 4 (where I've seen him mainly projected).
I get the feeling that he could step in and start with relatively little mentoring and he's got great size, enough to become our #1 quickly. Pair him with a talented Donnie Avery and I think we have a solid future in the receiving corps. He seems too talented to pass up to me, but I would guess Spags feels we have different obligations to fill. Depending on the depth of the o-linemen in the draft, I'm sure we could find a strong prospect early in the 2nd round.
Thoughts?
Thanks and looking forward to an improved team in '09!

The biggest issue I have with what you're saying
is that you’re almost making the argument to draft Crabtree just to keep Seattle from drafting him. I don’t like that at all. I know you don’t mean it 100%, but i’ve read similar comments from others that go along the same lines.
You don’t do that with the number 2 pick in the draft. Actually, it should never even enter your mind at that draft position.
We have a lot of issues on this team to address and, while WR is definitely one of them, the question is “is Crabtree going to help our team out more as a wide receiver than Monroe or Smith will on the line or Curry will as a linebacker?” I’m not so sure.
I’m not quite as sold on Crabtree’s guaranteed stardom as a lot of other people seem to be. I do think he’s going to be a good receiver but it’s really hard to say with any certainty how good a receiver will be in the NFL. Then, when you look at the WR field that’s available in the draft, I find it difficult not to think there isn’t a lot of good receivers (many of whom are much bigger and just as fast as Crabtree) who you can get a round or two later.
Personally, I think Crabtree is a sexy pick, but I’m not sold on him being the smart pick.

I agree tackle box, you don’t pick someone so that another club doesn’t get him. I think Crabtree is the # 1 guy but by how much over the other WR’s.. He is a good WR but alot of it was the system he was in. I think a guy like Robiskie might be just as solid a wideout as Crabtree and available early 2nd round. He was in a more balanced pro style offense than Crabtree was. There have been alot of # 1 WR busts, just ask the Lions. I also think that Seattle now that they have T.J. might look at the O-Line. They are pretty solid on D but the O-Line needs help. They lost Floyd Womack and Walter Jones is getting old..

Crabtree might not even make it to the Seahawks.
Now that KC has a QB, they may look to add a top receiver to give him something to throw to.

todd haley
in addition to the chiefs adding cassel, with todd haley as their new coach and the former offwnsive coordinator out in arizona, you know he had to love having larry and anquan as 2 big targets, he already has bowe in kc so crabtree and bowe could team up and be his new larry and anquan

yeah
thats not good strategy, but i see how it would be scary facing T.J and Crabtree then facing FItz and Boldin ,because at the moment we only have one proven corner.I would wait to pick up a receiver until the 3rd unless someone falls to us in the 2nd that we didnt expect to be there.
the west is ours
