Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The Rams would free up $8 million of cap space by cutting or trading Holt by June 1. They'd save $6 million by cutting or trading Pace by June 1...

At the Senior Bowl last month, one veteran scout said the word was that the Rams were floating the names of Pace and Holt as available via trade for a third-round pick.

League sources told the Post-Dispatch that an NFL club — believed to be Tennessee — was offering a first-round pick for Holt before the trading deadline last fall. The Rams decided against making the trade, the source said.

Rams have BIG personnel decisions to make. Trading either one of those guys early in the period is very possible, since teams will overpay for similar players, making a 3rd round pick relative cheap for some.

If true, they screwed up on the Holt thing. What was the thinking there?

you ask GM Jay Zygmunt what to do

and he does the wrong thing.

Jay Zygmunt, now that you have fired yourself, please have yourself hired by Seattle. Thanks.

When exactly is the trade deadline?

The only rationale I can think of is that the deadline was soon after the Cowboy game. After that game it appeared plausible that the Rams were going to be a contender in the West and the powers that be wanted to maximize their chances.

One of the few additional alternatives that I can think of is that the rumor is false.

i think that's it

the deadline is early, and for that brief moment, leadership, Haslett and the old guard more than anyone else, thought the Rams could compete for the division title.

And also business

The organisation had a hard time filling those empty seats and what kind of message do you send to your fan when you trade a fan favorite.

In any case

I’d be happy if they can move those two for a pair of thirds. We ought to be able to add a useful FA with the extra cap space and it’ll be nice to have the additional picks.

That will be it then for the players from the Rams Super Bowl winning team, right? Or am I overlooking someone?
