Rams All-Decade Team: OLB
Two seasons was enough to secure the much-missed London Fletcher the St. Louis Rams All-Decade team (TST edition) spot. The man who will replace London Fletcher as the next great Rams MLB, James Laurinaitis, came in a distant second on the strength of his yet-to-be-completed rookie season. And now we move outward to the outside linebacker spots (yes, we're assembling a 4-3 all-decade team defense).
Slimmer pickin's here. Cast your vote wisely. The top two voter getters make the team.
This hasn't been a particularly strong position for the Rams this decade, especially in recent years, like defensive tackle. Hey, I wonder if there's something to that and why the Rams defense has consistently been among the league's worst lately?

you have to give it to mike jones....
without him our beloved Rams could still be without a superbowl
That's a pretty disappointing list.....
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
btw,
i voted for Jones.

Although Chillar is quite possibly the best OLB on there.
and I’m still sore about letting him walk.

I was thinking...
the exact same thing; that list is pathetic.
I'm voting for Coaxley
because that was a classic Rams move to sign an outdated veteran to huge contract and not even get full seasons out of the guy.

The Fan base for losing teams-
OUCH! I’ve been browsing thru a number of other teams blogsand my keyboard started smoking. Those teams have some really pissed fans. Our team support is fantastic in comparison. Win or lose, the Rams have terrific support, even to have 163 fans active here on New Years eve.
Speaking for myself
I’m here because I have no life. But I’d rather be here than sitting on some damn train in the middle of the desert.
That makes 2 of us with no lives....
I’m posting 25 minutes after the new year………

How ya figure Knox? You'd have to go back to 2003 to find a Rams team with a winning record.
I think most of the TST faithful have become numb to losing. We’ve dropped 24 of our last 25 games. And we’ve won only 6 of our last 47. We’re either terminally naive (or hardheaded).
It's like this-
Take a guy with a really ugly wife, mean as hell, in debt up to his ears, kids that won’t speak to him, and a car that won’t start. Yet-the guy would crawl a mile thru hot coals and broken glass to give the family his all. I don’t care care what yesterday was, it’s gone—and tomorrow ain’t here yet—so today—I got my Rams stickers on my car, on my game room walls, and Ram patches on my clothes. Why? I don’t care to know. I’m a rams fan, so the rest of the world can stick it, and pry my autographed football out of my cold dead hand. My other hand will have my middle finger held high pointing toward the Bay Area!!!!

Definitely a rec worthy comment.
Poetic.

Why... just because someone is fixated on a perennial loser?
If the majority of fans don’t care whether their team is a bottom feeder, then what incentive do the owners and management have to correct things? Why should they spend $$$ if numbskulls will still flock to the Ed Jones Dome to see 30-40 point blowouts, and fools like me will sit home and pay for NFL gameday packages…? This kinda crap would never play in Pittsburgh. They’d ride the whole freakin’ losing organization outta town and start over from scratch.
I'm talking only Steeler fans. Baseball is a whole different dimension.
And, I’m quite familiar with the Pirates since I’ve been a Mets’ fan since the 1960s. My Dad grew up with their late pitching coach – Rube Walker.
Just saying
That kinda crap happens in Pittsburgh every year. And do you think if all the Rams fans were mad that we were losing and made it well known, that our players would suddenly get better. We spent as much as we possibly could this year. We were right up against the cap. You can’t just be good because the fans want it. You seem to think that if you were in charge we would be in the playoffs now. So if you took over at the same time as Devaney, how would we be better off than we are right now?
Can't think of a good sig
Well let's see what I can think of off-hand...
1. I would have traded/released Alex Barron before the season started – he has some talent, but it can’t be utilized. Because of his constant penalties and general “don’t care” type attitude, he’s a detriment to team morale.
2. I would NOT have drafted Keith Null in the 6th round. If wanted, and not by me, he could’ve probably been had undrafted.
3. I would have given Mike Vick a chance as b/u QB and utility player – same as Andy Reid had the balz to do. I think he and Jax would’ve made some nice things happen. If I hadn’t gotten him at first, I’d have worked it into the Witherspoon trade (which I’m not sure I’d have made in the 1st place).
4. Given Incognito’s past history, and the thousands of warnings he must have received before the season started, I’d have fired him after the first game that he showed his as*. That would have made a real impression on the other players earlier rather than later. Setts, Goldberg and Greco are more than adequate to replace Incogs and Barron.
5. I think after the piss-poor offensive play-calling (especially in the Jags and Redskins games), whether Shurmur’s or Spags fault, I’d have swallowed my pride and made Mike Martz my OC by midseason.
6. I’d have tried to pick up somebody/anybody with a pulse to help out on the D-Line. I know we can’t remotely afford a “Julius Peppers” type player given all the $$$ tied we’ve got tied up in Adam Carriker and Chris Long. But, the D-Line is the worst facet of the whole team – totally ineffective against the run or pass. That’s largely why our “D” is constantly around 30th ranked. The silver-lining here is that a 1-15 record lands us “Suh.”
7. I wouldn’t waste offensive plays going to guys like Gado or McMichael. Neither would be back next year.
8. I’d be doing a “root cause” evaluation right now to try to find out why about half my starting players are on IR. Is it partly coaching and training? Is it a strength and conditioning issue? Are they passing physicals when they shouldn’t be? Are minor injuries being allowed to become major? We’re way outside the curve for the number of expected injuries. It can’t all be “bad luck.”
*please note that none of my “suggestions” would cost much $$$ either*
We'd have about 4 wins.
Maybe….if we didn’t have so many injuries.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
I'd say that's about right...
The injuries hurt bad. But IF items 1-7 had been implemented at the start, we probably would have knocked off the Redskins and Jags. Then in the 2nd half we might’ve had enough oomph to upset the Saints, beat the crummy Sea Hawks and edged the Texans. Maybe 4-6 wins, which would have been fairly impressive.
Well most of 1-7 are in hindsight
and couldn’t be done at the beginning. Like you couldn’t have looked into the injury problem before it happened or known about Shurmur. I’d say 3-4 wins is about the max.
Can't think of a good sig
It's all speculation, but yeah, mostly agree.
But we could’ve cut Barron and/or Cogs anytime. Four wins would’ve made me feel a lot better and hopeful about things. Mainly, we wouldn’t be ranked #32 out of 32 teams.
but, the point I was trying to make,
is that 4 wins doesn’t help us improve. You’ve still got a lot of positions to fill (with the current plan or your plan) so having a better shot at better talent is going to help the team going forward.
Unless you’re making the playoffs, I’d just as soon bottom out. Like I’ve said before, 4 wins is what the Raiders do almost every year. They always draft weird and take on big players and all it does is move them up from the worst team to a 4 to 5 win team every year.
Basically, I guess I don’t see the big deal or difference between being ranked 32nd or 26th. Btw, weren’t we ranked last when we took Pace?
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
In my opinion anything under 8-8 is a poor season.
Once in awhile a .500 record can get you into the playoffs. But, I’d just like to see us WIN some games. And, you’ve got to start improvement somewhere. 4-6 wins would’ve been a foundation to build on. We know it’s possible from the Dolphin’s season a year ago to do a 180 degree and got from 1-15 to 11-5. Albeit that’s about one chance in 1000. But I thought we’d bottomed out at 3-13, and then 2-12.
The problem with our 3-13 season
followed by our 2-12 season, is we had morons running the ship.
At least with Spags and Devaney I feel we have people in charge who not only know what they’re doing, but have a vision of what they want and how they want to get there.
Linehan was a deer in headlights and Zygmunt was incompetent and unable to be a GM.
Honestly, I’m at peace with this 1 win since I know it has a benefit. Next year, I won’t settle for bottom of the pack. I want to see a real improvement in the win column. This year, even though a lot of us had hopes for upwards of 6 wins, it probably wasn’t realistic and, adding in the injuries, was unavoidable for the most part.
But, all I ask, is take advantage of the draft position.

I was commenting on his loyalty as well (and mostly to)
his one finger salute to the Bay Area.

Really...?
Do you think there are a lot TST fans that don’t equally hate the 49ers, Sea Hawks, and say, the Patriots as well? Back in the 70s we used to particularly hate the Vikings and Cowboys too.
I'm not sure where this was going.
I thought his comment was funny so I rec’d it, now we’re having some debate about fan loyalty, rivalries, and the old times.
I didn’t mean for this to be so controversial. I just found his comment humorous.

Btw,
didn’t we just “run the whole freakin’ losing organization outta town and start over from scratch”?
Or did i miss something?
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
Yes and yes, but...
…please see items 1-7 above again. We held onto some rotten eggs and missed a few opportunities.
Those rotten eggs were basically held onto to for 2 reasons.
1) because they had talent and the new coach wanted an opportunity to get the most out of them (I can live with that), and…
2) we couldn’t cut everyone. Some players simply had to stick around for either cap or roster reasons.
Nevertheless, the players you mention are all probably going to be gone this offseason (which I’m sure was part of the plan anyway unless they had a complete revelation on life) so I’m not sure what the big deal is.
And as far as the missed opportunities, I don’t think their franchise wrecking missed opportunities so I’m not too concerned about them either.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
I know I fall into the "hardheaded" category.
I’m definitely not in the “naive” boat, but I’m loyal to my city’s teams and remember how f’n good it felt to win that SuperBowl in 1999/2000.
It’s gonna feel even better the next time since I really didn’t have as much invested in the team the first time it happened.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
You're sort of right about numbness.
I honestly don’t know what I would do if the Rams were good. Since I can hardly remember a time when we weren’t constantly shooting themselves in the foot and being awful. I’m numb to losing now that we are bad, but if we were expected to win I think I would take it worse. I’m pretty sure that’s how it is for a lot of people. Because in blowout games, I’m not upset, I just think another week of football in the books. But in games like the Jags and Skins games this year, I am upset about losses. I’m glad the St. Louis Cardinals are good pretty much every year or else I don’t know if I could take an entire year of watching my team get pounded. That’s why the offseason is a great time around here, it is filled with hope, optimism and “what could be’s” If I remember correctly, many people around here were predicting a 6-10 season before the season started. I think that is possible next year, but who knows. Lets just pray for a capped year so we can get some more young talent on the team. An uncapped year or two would really delay the rebuilding process and it couldn’t have come at a worse time.

I'm not a hometown fan type. I work right across from BOA Stadium - home of the Carolina Panthers
But, I never switched my allegience from the Rams when the Panthers showed up in 1995. I have also pulled for the Rams in every game they’ve played against Carolina.
I was shocked...
to learn the team has had only four winning seasons in its 15 years in St. Louis. The “Greatest Show on Turf” years were so outstandingly phenomenal, it made me forget the horrors that both preceded and succeeded it.
