Around SBN: UFC 146 Predictions

Ram's Fans! Please read!

It's so early to be talking about the NFL draft and people are doing it anyway. Normally, I'd never do this..but I'm doing this for one reason.

I dont know about you, but I'm about sick of all these mock drafts by people who have no idea what they are talking about. (For instance, I saw a mock draft that had the Chiefs taking Dez Bryant) So what I am doing is going to each NFL team's blog here on SB Nation and getting some input on who the player to be taken will be.

Now, I want to keep this realistic. Dont think of the player you WANT. Think of the player you need most, who will help your team the most, and who is likely to be chosen. To keep this plain and simple, I'm not going to include trading down. I know its going to happen in the draft at some point but thats impossible to predict and this just makes it much easier.

Also, I'm doing this in CURRENT order, not projected records at the end of the season. Therefore, the St. Louis Rams are on the clock. I dont really have a certain time frame to determine who the pick will be but after I receive an adequate amount of feedback, I'll lock in the pick. Unfortunately, I'm going to be doing this by reading the comments and tallying up the votes myself instead of a poll. So..St. Louis..who is your pick?

Well if we are #1 and there is no trading down...

Then the pick should be SUH. Our other needs are as follows:
1) DE
2) OLB
3) OT
4) RB

but SUH will give us/Spags versatility and some needed run stopping support. He is argueably the best defensive player in the draft (right there with Berry, Dunlap, McCoy, McClain, Spikes). He has the character and ability the Rams are looking for in early draft picks while trying to build a team for the future. Its only a matter of time before the Rams have a formiddable defense and Suh will be a nice piece to Spags puzzle.

It's simple

1. Suh
2. BPA
3. BPA…

Our needs are OLB, DE, RB, TE, CB, IMO.

SUH

our run d has been shaky though much improved from last year with the additions of animal jr and james butler

the reason i pick suh is because i dont think there is a qb worth taking at #1, i would like to see the rams get some more WR talent around null and see what happens next year.

Suh in the first round.

BPA in any of our areas of need after that. I would love it to be a pass rushing DE.

by andyrose on Dec 25, 2009 10:37 PM CST reply actions

It's simple.

Rams Defensive Ranks:

Yards Allowed Per Game #29
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game #27
Opponents Rushing Yards Per Attempt #29
QB Sacks #30

What’s the best way to get pressure/contain the run? Great D-Linemen.

The best available in the draft? It’s this guy:

No Contest. If there is no trade down, we take the best player available who just happens to fill a huge need. Go Rams!

yea how about the huge game against Texas.

Mizzou lost like 3 games because he hurt Gabbert on that play. As you can see Gabberts ankle is about to be in an awkward position once Suh lands on it. Even though he played hurt, it made a huge different not having him 100%.

Alright

I figured the pick would be Suh. But I didnt want to automatically assume that as if the Rams didnt have other pressing needs.

As a Chiefs fan, I know how frustrating it can be to have such a poor team. Its even more frustrating when outsiders try to peg you with certain needs, not knowing what past draft picks are showing potential and whatnot.

Like I said in the post, I saw a Mock with someone who had the Chiefs taking Dez Bryant. Yes, WR is a need, but I can say with confidence that there is no way in hell anybody in the Chiefs organization would want to draft Dez Bryant with a top 5 pick, when their are other pressing needs.

I should have came back and checked sooner, but since its late, I’ll go ahead and wait until tomorrow to lock up Suh as the #1 pick overall. Thanks for the feedback!!

by Petey14 on Dec 26, 2009 1:44 AM CST reply actions

That is certainly infuriating...

…I keep hearing QB QB QB QB…

It does merit serious consideration, but this draft seems weak at the top, which is why I don’t anticipate us going that route despite inadequate play from our QBs this year minus a few random performances.

By the way, Dez Bryant would be a fantastic pick even for the Texans, who don’t really need a WR. The kid looks better than Crabtree if you ask me, but I certainly understand the feeling of having a “need” determined for you by the ESPN kids that don’t even watch your team.

At least McShay thinks we’ll take Suh. :D

i agree this year draft isn’t a powerful draft.. i think the rams should trade the number 1 pick and get more picks (just like we did in the 99 draft to Indy to get faulk we traded the NO.6 pick for him and my did it pay off). i think we can get about 3 late round picks for the number 1 pick

by RamFan 4 life on Dec 27, 2009 7:09 PM CST up reply actions

BTW

I havent caught many Rams games this season, but I notice alot of you are saying DE is a need. My first thought was “what happened to Chris Long?”

So I look him up..last year he had a decent year for a rookie DE with 40 tackles, 4 sacks and a FF.

Whats up with him this year? NFL.com say’s he has only started 2 games. I see he also has 4 sacks this year, which I dont think is anything to be disappointed about. Sometimes DL’s (moreso DT’s and 3-4 DE’s, but it happens to 4-3 DE’s too) it takes 2-3 seasons for them to really develop. But I know Leonard Little has been injured and needs to be replaced.

So my guess is STL is looking for a Left DE? And if anybody could shed some light on Chris Long, that’d be nice..I thought that guy was going to become a beast..then I see hes only started 2 games! What is Spag’s doing over there?!

by Petey14 on Dec 26, 2009 1:51 AM CST reply actions

I'm glad you asked...

…Long had a pretty good rookie season. Any displeasure with him is actually aimed at him being a solid player, but not yet #2 status. That said, if you ask me, he’s had a better year this year than last, and still has a couple of games to add to the sack total. At one point he had 4 in a 5 game stretch. More importantly, he had a couple of other games where he got pressure consistently (the last game against the Texans, he was withing a half second of sacking the QB on at least 3 different occasions).

He would have 5 by now were it not for an intentional grounding call (I swear, the Titans QB was as near the floor as possible). To sum it up, he’s made strides, but I remain confident that the best comparison is another former Virginia Cavalier DE Patrick Kerney, whose sack totals Long has eclipsed through the first 2 years, and who had a breakout 12 sack year in his 3rd year.

With help at the DT position, I can see Chris Long having this breakout year next year. Don’t be alarmed by the starts. Spagnuolo is a rotation-heavy coach, especially on the D-Line, which means that Long has had as many or more snaps at DE as anyone on the team.

By the way, your assessment is correct. We’re assuming DE is a need because:

A) The jury is still out on Long (despite some naysayers) and
B) Leonard Little and James Hall aren’t getting any younger

I can see the Rams addressing DE as early as Round 2 believe it or not, but most likely in rounds 3 or 4 or Free Agency. All I can say regarding the Suh pick is that it would aid our line, make it young and full of potential, as well as (hopefully, if the guy’s talent translates) free up Long and future star James Laurinaitis. While Laurinaitis has had a great year thus far, considering the tackle numbers and some turnovers forced, he hasn’t had as many impact plays as I think he could if the D-Line can free him up and keep him clean. I think drafting Suh could help these two recent high draft picks tremendously, as well as experience of course.

He got better.

By now in the season he is our best defensive lineman. He is tough against the run. He leads the team in sacks and QB pressures. What happened was that he started maturing into a pretty good defensive end.

by andyrose on Dec 31, 2009 12:06 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah. He's worked his way up to slightly below average.

How can Long be tough against the run with stats of 1-3 tackes per game and virtually no assists? I’ll spot you the fact that he’s better now than Little or Hall, who are headed for forced retirement. Not so sure he’s better than Ryan or Gibson (IR).

by edpjr on Dec 31, 2009 8:23 AM CST up reply actions

It isn't just tackles that define how well you play the run.

How many times did he string out a run to the sideline so the CB or LB could get there and make the tackle? How many times did he pile up plays headed in his direction so the runner had nowhere to go? How many times did he take out all the blockers so someone else could make the tackle? When your defense is set up so the linemen soak up the blockers to let the LBs run free to the ball, linemen won’t get many tackles.

Earlier in the season he was making lots of mistakes when playing runs, but I’m not seeing those mistakes now. He seems to have finally figured it out and is playing much better. He certainly isn’t playing at Pro Bowl level, but I think he is somewhat above average now and I have hopes for more next year.

by andyrose on Dec 31, 2009 12:14 PM CST up reply actions

Good points, add this

True about soaking up blockers and stringing out runs, those are very important aspects of good DL guys.

Something about Long that was prevalant in his early season play was getting run by TE’s. I mean backed out of the box run. It was like he had no strength or drive at all. And on pass plays, he was last off the line and (surprise) last to get in the backfield. I haven;t be able to see any tape of him lately but if he’s making plays I would bet he fixed both of those things.

Probably he’s here reading us
(you get the sarcasm, right?)

Just keep in mind

Jason Smith was a relatively unknown college player until the months leading up to the draft where he shot up the draft boards. I still remember around this time last season most people wanted/thought the Rams would draft Andre Smith.

I’m not saying Suh = A. Smith, but a lot changes between now and draft day, especially because of the combine

Agreed, However, Smith seems to have incurred a very serious concussion.

This observation was NOT intended to reflect in a derogatory way on Smith. We desperately need him. Unfortunately, it’s possible he may never play again. All of us are made differently. Some people can have repeated bruises to the soft brain tissue and recover fine. Other people don’t. So many things can be affected, i.e. vision, motor skills, coordination, memory, etc. It depends on the area of the brain affected. The fact that Smith has been out as long as he has does not bode well for his condition. And, as Dr. McCoy of Star Trek might have said the inverse of: “Dammit Jim I’m an Engineer, not a Doctor.” But my wife is an RN and one of my best friends is an MD. Keep your fingers crossed.

by edpjr on Dec 27, 2009 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

Not only that

But the NFL is treating concussed players differrently now. He may not have the flexibility to make the decision himself. If he can play again and it occurs again chances will be slim.

by dbcouver on Dec 27, 2009 11:45 PM CST up reply actions

From experience

So full disclosure on this one. I’ve had multiple concussions from wrestling and football. Last one happend in 1998. Have had post concussion headaches since then. Not just a migrane here and there. Im talking headache 24/7 with migranes sprinkled in for fun. Anyway it is not uncommon for severe concussions to have symptoms for long periods of time. My first official one put me out of contact sports for about a year. As long as he does not have a history of concussions he should be fine for next year.

who the rams will pick for the 2010 draft

we all know most likely the rams will pick up the DT suh from Nebraska. in the past my beloved rams have had my success with drafting many D linemen from Nebraska. i think the Rams should actually trade the Number 1 pick for a few late round picks cause the rams have a lot of dead money and they need so much help in many positions

by RamFan 4 life on Dec 27, 2009 7:05 PM CST reply actions

They have over 30 million to spend this offseason

And just because Carriker was from Nebraska doesn’t mean Suh will be a bust just because he went to Nebraska. Carriker was not this dominant when he was their.

by edpjr on Dec 27, 2009 8:22 PM CST up reply actions

The last thing we need is a bunch of new below average players from late round picks.

We’ve got about 45 losers right now. We need a few stars to build a team around.

by edpjr on Dec 27, 2009 8:20 PM CST up reply actions

Most of the dead money will disappear after this year.

We need talent, not more guys who couldn’t make the roster for other teams. We’ll have plenty of money to make a couple of moves in free agency and pay for our high draft choices. Let’s bring in some real talent, not a bunch of low round losers.

by andyrose on Dec 27, 2009 8:47 PM CST reply actions

Top talent here first, then there

I wouldn’t say they have 45 losers right now, but I do agree that playmakers , not just players, are needed. Even boring plays like sealing off pass rushers or opening Jackson’s path. I’d rather they get a few of the best than a lot of the rest. A key consideration in that idea: the best have to be a certain places first.

I think the Rams have done a good job staffing some key positions ahead of others — LT and C on offense, MLB on defense. Seems as though either QB or DT would be the natural next choice for this team to invest heavily in.

I usually think teams that draft the same positions highly in consecutive years have problems with talent judgement. Like Matt Millen’s WR choices for the Lions. What a disaster. I also don’t think it makes sense to acquire an All Star WR if you don’t have the QB and O-Line to actually run effective passing plays. So far it looks like the Rams don’t have that problem, although the housecleaning they did helped, going forward. I think they have pretty decent material to work with in their most important places and shouldn’t need to repeat picks in those positions. Even Long is showing more game lately, and on my list DE isn’t far after the cornerstones of QB, LT, C, MLB, and DT. Right there with RB and SS.

by CoachConnors on Dec 27, 2009 11:02 PM CST reply actions

This draft is heavy on Defense

Suh and a nice DE would be my choice. I’m hoping we can find more playmakers in the later rounds as well though. I also wouldn’t be upset if Iupati fell to the 33rd pick. Not a playmaker but possibly the best OL in the draft. God knows we need quality.

by dbcouver on Dec 27, 2009 11:50 PM CST reply actions

i agree

i think we need talent and if Iupatti is on 2rd. take it, if he’s not, go for the best DE available.

we have many holes that can be fixed, so we add the best talent on it for rebuilding this team, among that in the next year will not have a great team but we can get better Dline and Oline

our offence: add OG and OT depends if Barron continue in this team cause i think that OT in 4 or 5rd. make the same work as barron or maybe better

the QB possition i like Max Hall in 6rd., thinking on get an free agency QB like Jeff García to starter and the others QBs, learning from he.

My idal mock draft will be:

1 DT Suh
2 OG Iupatti
3 DE Brandon Lang or Austen Lane
4 TE Dennis Pitta
5 OT Will Barker or Jared Veldheer
5 From eagles: CB Myron Lewis Or CB Walter Thurmond III Or RB Chris Brown
6 DE Alex Carrington
7 QB Max Hall

ADD A player undrafted: OLB Boris Lee

I don't want Pitta

I saw something that says he’s too old to be playing college. He could be 25-26 before he plays a game for us. I’d rather have Ed Dickson from Oregon. I’ve checked all through google and have not once found a site that lists Pitta’s age. No other player in the draft has the problem to my knowledge. Usually just google a name and his player page will come up with his age, not Pitta.

by Carneros on Dec 29, 2009 12:37 AM CST up reply actions

oh, no, sorry but your crystal ball is fail

A couple of points here.
No way in hell the Rams ignore offensive “skill” positions with only a 4th round TE.

Tell me why we need another bottom of the draft project QB. That doesn’t further their cause one iota. Would they go with a free agent Established gu8y as the starter and then have Null and this 7th round rookie as the QB2 and QB3? A guy who is better than Null but not elite does nothing to address the need.
No sir, that’s not a draft that will improve the team much considering their premium positioning for picking of #1 in every found.

I’m in favor of the TE pick but only if its drafting Gresham with the 2, and not some guy in the 4th or 5th to be another merely servicable guy like a Fells.

For the record I would be elated with either playmakers Berry or Suh, and then the playmaking Gresham in the 2nd, but this would mean stealing a Quinn or a Kolb first. I finish it up with the best player available from this pool of positions: RB, WR, CB, DE, OLB (no order, all equal, just BPA from those spots.)

That draft would make me happy as hell for the first 3 picks and the rest would be gravy.

One thing I’m pretty confident in: they WILL spend FA Money and/or early pick(s) on Offensive skill positions because they have a good enough O-line anchorage in LT & C, Jackson needs some air game to take the pressure off and the offense currently has a glaring need for playmakers every bit as much as the D.

Yu have it in writing — keep this and hold me to it.

by CoachConnors on Dec 29, 2009 1:27 AM CST up reply actions

TE and WR are the most glaring on Offense.

DE/DT/OLB are the defensive ones.

Suh 1st,
BPA DE/WR 2nd
BPA TE/OLB 3rd
BPA DE/WR 4th
BPA OLB/DE 5th
BPA WR 6th
BPA DT 7th

That’s where I stand at the moment, of course pending the free agency period.

my crystal ball? for sure ..fail, but

Like i’d said i hope we get the best player available cause we have many holes, but i like we started with the D Line and O Line.

And Why hell’s i like hall and pitta?
because they’re come from a functional pass offensive.
i mean they’re have practice to move the ball.
And i think they’re underrated, but i think they has some tallent to be on finals rounds.

here they’re stats

2008 BYU 83 1083 13.0 46 6 0 0 0

Among the stats, these numers no warranty equal results in nfl, but who does?

by pusosram on Dec 29, 2009 8:05 PM CST up reply actions

I think you mean

if Gresham still alive after the first round.

I don’t think they need a G in the 2nd round or a QB in the 7th. I really don’t think they need a OT in the 5th but by that time there may be some crazy value to be had….5th round picks are impossible to project in April, let alone December.

But for the G and QB picks – in the 2nd there will be too much other talent in areas they need more than G, the list is long and G isn’t near the top, and I don’t see any point at all to a QB int he 7th, no matter how much his perceived value has dropped. That’s Null already, they don’t want or need another Null.

by CoachConnors on Dec 29, 2009 8:37 PM CST up reply actions

sorry my bad english

ther reason which i want a G is if Iupatti iif he is available in 2rd. because i think we need some one to help J Brown, and if Barron can’t healthy next season or cut, Will Barker or Jared Veldheer can play RT and J Smith on OT.
I will glad to see the rams fighting the trenches cause i think this help to the Rushing game, Passing and if we can pressure the qb Passing coverage must be better

What are you a zoob (derogatory for BYU people)? Pitta I can understand. Especially if you can get one of the best TE in the nation at round 4 but he is old. Them missionaries shorten their NFL careers. But Max Hall? Yea he played well in the bowl game but he was terrible in every BYU vs Utah game. The big rivalry game. I have really never seen him play great against elite competition. Plus he made himself into a complete classless ass after the Utah game.

I am a Lions fan so I am not unbiased here, but......

I am very surprised that there is not more of a demand for a franchise QB at #1.
Your offence has scored 16.4, 14.5, and 11.3 [to date] points per game the last three years.
Your QB situation is not good at all, you drafted a Tackle at the #2 spot last year and signed one of the top FAs for your Center, and still have one of the best RBs in the league. That seems to me a good situation for a rookie QB to succeed.

I know Suh looks really good, but honestly don’t you guys really need a QB to get back to the playoffs?

NOTE: If you pick Suh ahead of us, I see us able to trade our pick much more easily for the top [and maybe only really solid] QB in this draft; J. Clausen.

That's because you listen to what ESPN has to say at times...

…our offense has been riddled by injuries every single year. I don’t just mean random injuries, I mean season ending IR injuries to our best WR, at least 3 of our O-Lineman every year, as well as injuries to Steven Jackson. Not to mention the aging that was mostly purged this year.

Another telling stat:

Rams Defensive Ranks:

Yards Allowed Per Game #29
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game #27
Opponents Rushing Yards Per Attempt #29
QB Sacks #30

That’s a bigger problem than our QBs. A much bigger problem. We’re ranked 27th in total offense, which isn’t SO bad considering all the injuries. We just struggle in the red zone, which is more of a runningback/O-line responsibility if you ask me.

The demand for a QB would be higher if there was actually a QB that looks worthy of a #1 pick and, to this date, the most dominant college player is Ndamukong Suh, and he happens to fit an arguably bigger need. I understand you want Suh badly, but it’s not likely the Rams pass him if we end up #1. We need to build to our strengths and, if I had to pick a strength on this team right now, it’s the defense.

I hear you and could see you drafting Suh, but.....

it will be difficult to improve much if you are relying on a broken down Marc Bulger or a QB who is a project. You will just be looking for another QB next year or the year after.

Us Lions fans went through a similar debate last year. We did not have a player like Suh to compare to Stafford, but I think the Lions made the right choice.

Wouldn't quite chalk that one up.

If he doesn't retire...

…he might as well stay with STL for with a paycut. Wherever he goes, he’ll have to take one anyway. No one is realistically going to sign him for that much money. If he wants to play football next year, it’ll be with the Rams with a paycut. Otherwise he’ll retire.

Qb i don't think

At least don’t like claussen, mccoy, tebow in 1st. round, if J locker enter the draft maybe or if bradford don’t be fragile, lions get a qb and where they’re.

I think that take time rebuilding a team that in our case, since Dick V we don’t have add the tallent necesary to keep us in play-offs

i agree

Yeah, first the trenches and add a Jeff Garcia FA, thinking on a rebuild, besides that a young QB don’t guide us a post temp without a Defensive, that’s what we need improve our D Line and O Line.

my crystal ball? for sure ..fail, but

Like i’d said i hope we get the best player available cause we have many holes, but i like we started with the D Line and O Line.

my mockdraft, reflects that, i hope that Iupatti don’t fly in 1st. round, to get him but i think that is more probable that Iupatti land in 2rd. than greesham if Gresham still alive the first round, no doubts, get him.

And Why i like hall and pitta?
because they’re come from a functional pass offensive.
i mean they’re have practice to move the ball.
And i think they’re underrated, but i think they has more tallent to be on finals rounds.

here they’re stats
stats of pitta:
YEAR TEAM REC YDS AVG LNG TD FUM
2007 BYU 59 813 13.8 45 5 0
2008 BYU 83 1083 13.0 46 6 0
2009 BYU 62 829 13.4 35 8 0

and the Hall stats:
YEAR TEAM CMP ATT PCT YDS AVG TD LNG INT RAT
2007 BYU 298 496 60. 1 3848 7.8 26 66 12 137.71
2008 BYU 330 478 69.0 3957 8.3 35 76 14 156.88
2009 BYU 275 409 67.2 3560 8.7 33 80 14 160.13

Among the stats, these numers no warranty equal results in nfl, but who does?

Besides, i’m not married with this mock draft, maybe enter in the draft some more tallent, i hope

some thoughts

First, I’m interested to see how Carricker and Gary Gibson turn out in the off season. Both showed potential and I think each guy can be pretty flexible on the line.

Second, I can see Clausen and Bradford gaining some steam through the off season, warranting some serious consideration from a team with a 7th round pick at quarterback who has thrown 9 int’s in 3 games (although he is poised…pssh). A little extra scrutiny on these two college QB’s could reveal pluses and minuses but I’m not ready to write either of them off.

Third, Defensive Tackles do not usually pan out as expected. I absolutely loved Glenn Dorsey coming out of LSU and as soon as Chris Long was taken I nearly cried (the Hokie blood in me still burns when I say his name). I know Suh looks good but I have seen many a game where he wasn’t the impact player he was supposed to be. Don’t get me wrong, when he is on, HE IS ON, but it’s only in the consistancy you can expect from a DT (see Haynesworth, Albert).

Fourth, assessing our needs I see QB, RB2, CB, DL, LB, WR, in that order. Again, this is assuming our roster is upgraded purely by injury recovery. WR I have quite a bit of faith in, LB I can see us drafting a guy to fill in at the weak spot (Cody Grimm?), DLine could benefit from a reworking of the regime (Carricker pushed out wide), and RB2’s can be found nearly anywhere (Darby and Gado are garbage, Ogbannaya can stay). This leaves QB, Campbell is garbage, Kolb is a stretch to get, Vick isn’t a guy to build a franchise around, Erik Ainge/Troy Smith/Brady Quinn are not guys I want to waste a season on anymore.

Lastly, Suh is still the pick. I’m not sure I like it as much as most but he’s got to be it. Clausen and Bradford could be great additions but neither are coming off a good season of college football, unlike Suh. If Suh can continue to improve like he has over this season, there is no doubt he will be good in the NFL. When your rebuilding I always feel like you want players who know how to be successful and Suh seems like one of those guys. Afterwards grab Ryan Mallet, some LB, some CB, some WR and you got a winning team? I don’t think so, but its close.
