Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Is Mel Kiper an idiot???

That may have been a bit harsh, but I expect more from a guy that is supposed to be an expert.  He has officially lost some validity with me.  At least I think McShay is better at what he does.  Here is what Kiper had to say about our last draft:

St. Louis Rams (Spring grade: C)
I'll improve the Rams' grade a little. I said on draft day that they should have taken Mark Sanchez, but they opted to try to protect Marc Bulger's backside one more season. Jason Smith hasn't been a breakthrough, but at least he's starting on the right side -- and should develop further. Where they win is with James Laurinaitis in Round 2. He has been simply excellent. They were able to trade Will Witherspoon for a WR. Not much else. If they had drafted Sanchez, I'd have them much higher.
Current grade: C+/B-

No mention of Bradley Fletcher???

You wanted us to take Mark Sanchez, even after this year performance.  Even after his head coach and Offensive Coordinator Sark said that he was not ready????  Doesn't make sense to me, other than the comment about james L.  What do you guys think?

Ummmmm

Kiper IS an idiot. What good is a QB if he’snot protected. We clearly needed to fill that position, and it’s not like we selected a second rounder with our #2 pick or something.

Sanchez hasn’t had that great a year, i agree.

Another thing, he wanted us to take Ray Maleuga (sry for spelling) if my memory serves me right.

Now he’s in the JL camp. A couple more years and you’ll see a Lot more in the JL camp. This kid is a special talent and hopefully will stay healthy and be our SAM through many superbowl runs… while Kiper remains on the bandwagon ha

I might be wrong

Don’t you mean Mike linebacker? Unless SAM means Super Asskicking Middle linebacker. I was always taught Sam= Strong side Mike= Middle Will= Weak side.

+1 anyway

It is milk it may be spilled it may be delicious.

Kiper has always been an idiot

Besides, Mark Sanchez is sucking in New York. I’m glad we don’t have him.

And McShay isn't any better

You can google McShay’s many complete misses on draft picks. His analysis is nothing more than regurgitated crap from other people. He has been so increibly wrong so often, I don’t know how he continues to get paid. It’s all image, no substance.

by CoachConnors on Dec 24, 2009 10:57 AM CST reply actions

But don't you wish you had their job?

They sort through other peoples work, make guesses about who is hot right now, who is the edgy pick and then copy every other mock drafter and call it a day.

I believe in 2010

No one knows how a given player will do in the NFL.

Look at all those who felt Ryan Leaf was equal to Manning. You just have to do the best analysis you can and hope you are right. It’s just as true for Kiper and McShay as it is for the teams on draft day. No one should put too much weight on the analysis of these draft gurus.

ESPN and the NFL Network don’t really have anybody that’s knows what they’re talking most of the time. Didn’t everyone say Maurice Jones-Drew was too small.

Kiper also said the Colts should have taken Trent Dilfer with fifth pick in the 94 draft.

Dilfer only won a Super Bowl, because of the Ravens D. Other then that his numbers are horrible.

Here's a couple more of my favorite Kiper prediction.

“Receiver Vincent Jackson was a reach in the second round as the Chargers were desperate to add a receiver”

After the 2005 draft “San Francisco 49ers: A good first day but an average second day” They took Frank Gore on the second day.

“The next three picks were all reaches (corner Ronald Bartell Jr., safety Oshiomogho Atogwe and center Richie Incognito)”
Two of these guys are actually good players, good call Kiper.

Atogwe was definitely a reach

Does that guy even know how to play defense?

Can't think of a good sig

by Carneros on Dec 24, 2009 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

A reach?

Are you kidding me? Atogwe was drafted second overall In the third round that year only two guys have been to the pro bowl and one was taken ahead of Atogwe. He is easily a top 5 player from that round.

Too bad Joel Buschbaum isn't still around.

He was a guy who cared more about doing the research than in looking pretty for TV. I don’t know if his record was any better than any of the others, but he gave you the feeling he was working at it and truly cared.
