Rams add TE Fells to lengthy IR list

Another Monday, another player to the Injured Reserve list for the St. Louis Rams. Today's entrant is TE Daniel Fells who was placed on IR after a fracture in his thigh and a sprained ligament. Though Fells had just 4 receptions in his last two games - he left late in the first quarter this week - the third year TE was an important part of the Rams injury-depleted pass catchers.

CB Quincy Butler has a knee and an ankle sprain that will probably keep him out for the rest of the season, definitely this week.

The Rams will activate CB Jonathan Wade for their game against the Cardinals. Jeez. Remember, Wade was a starting CB when the season began, and was gradually replaced by Bradley Fletcher. At first, it just seemed like Fletcher was a better corner, because he was, but then Butler and Justin King got more reps after Fletcher went to IR. Such is life in the NFL...

In one other item of interest from the injury report today: OT Jason Smith has not taken another baseline neurological examination. Hmmm. That most likely means he's still experiencing symptoms and is thus close to being shut down for the season, officially or unofficially. That's too bad. I'd really like to see more Smith, but there's no point taking a risk with your investment for two more games of what could very well become a one-win season.

For those of you keeping count at home, that's 12 players on IR for the Rams, 9 of those players were starters. Here's the list:

  • DT Adam Carriker
  • WR Laurent Robinson
  • DT Gary Gibson
  • LS Chris Massey
  • WR Keenan Burton
  • FS Oshiomogho Atogwe
  • OG Jacob Bell
  • CB Bradley Fletcher
  • TE Daniel Fells
  • WR Brooks Foster
  • DE C. J. Ah You
  • S Eric Bassey

If you include players that could and probably should be put on IR, you've got quite a team.

It's about time

we hadn’t added anyone for like a week.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Injury curse

3 years running and injuries galore. Why are the Rams injury cursed?

J Smith - call it a career?

I’m getting concerned Jason Smith may never be healthy enough to play again. It’s not like a bone break where you can literally see it gradually healing. Soft tissue, and brain matter in particular, can sometimes never come back right.

It's a serious point-

He should have healed way before now. If his injury is that long-lasting, that does not bode well next year in the trenches. He wasn’t takings serious bangs with the one’s during preseason for anything to show up. Keep your fingers crossed.

i think that's why they're being extra cautious with him

we’ll see. I hope not because the Rams can’t afford to lose a single one of their young core.

Why Fells and Smith being out matters more than you think

What are the three things a young QB needs to be succcesful?

1. A solid running game to take the defensive keys away form the air game. Check!
2. A dependable Left Tackle so he can calm down and concentrate on his progressions. Nope!
3. A tight end with reliable hands to dump off to 7 yards away. Nope!

A great tight end is a huge security blanket to a young QB. They are the biggest target the QB will have and are usually the closest receiver to the QB — so they are the easiest to see and easiest pass to make on the run or at bad angles.

Even Jamarcus Russell looked legit at times with Zach Miller 5 yards in front of him. If they decide Null is the answer going forward, then I want Jermaine Gresham in round 2!

Most of the players on IR don't worry me

While their injuries were severe enough to keep them out for the season, there is no doubt in my mind that most will be 100% in time for next season.
The two injuries of concern are obviously Jason Smith and Bradley Fletcher. Even if Jason Smith manages to come back from this concussion, if he gets another one down the road, that could be the end of his career. Fletcher’s career may already be over.

To be honest I think their are plenty of guys that we can't lose

Robinson, Daniel Fells, Gary Gibson…

they all play well enough to merit concern.

Not to mention Bulger should probably be on that list.

Blame?

So where does the blame lie for these injuries? How many years have we suffered through countless o-linemen going down and then being forced to play with a makeshift line? Is it up to a strength/conditioning coach, trainers, who is it?

Granted, some players are simply injury-prone, but this many on the IR seems a bit extreme. Am I right or am I just getting frustrated???

I'm right with ya

But it seems like the coaches keep changing- I’d guess the trainers do too with all the staff changes we’ve seen recently.

Horrible luck?

Hey ram rod-check this out-

What if we started all of our backups first, then when they all went on IR, we would then be playing our starters. Talk about suprising our opponents!!

by Knoxfan on Dec 22, 2009 2:04 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Check other teams--

The IR list for a lot of teams is shocking. ie..Bills-17 on IR, almost twice ours.

by Knoxfan on Dec 22, 2009 1:54 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

My question is

What is it about the bad teams in the league, i.e-Bills and Rams, that causes us to have these laundry lists of players on the IR? I just don’t get it. Are coaches running practices too hard during the latter parts of the season, poor trainers, poor medical facilities, or what??

It just aggravates the tar out of me when we finally start to look like our players are getting their assignments and understanding Spags schemes, and then we have guys falling down all around the field! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

Check out this link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_NFL_team_rosters
I know it’s wikipedia, but it looks pretty accurate. There are currently 18 teams w/ 9 or more players on I.R. The Saints have 14 on IR

Remember the seasons leading up to our SB win. Nobody wanted to play for Coach Vermeil. They said they had too many practices and the worked them to hard. They asked coach to cut a day out so he did but he lengthened the time of the days they worked and it paid off. I’m curious what thier IR list looked like.

as far as Smith goes, i know how scary of a situation he is in because just recently i had to go to the emergency room due to a week long session of totaly debilatating headaches, to the point that they would hit out of the blue and literally crumple me to a fetal position and the docs thought it was either an brain bleed ( anuerism ), menengitis or a bruised brain. Torns out it was only bruised but if he has anything like what i had i don’t know if he risks playing again, then again he is getting a few more bucks then me so that could sway the decision a little

If practice makes perfect....
Yet nobodies perfect.....
Then why practice ???

FILE - In this Sept. 4, 2009 file photo, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Shaun Hill aims a pass downfield against the San Diego Chargers during the first quarter of an NFL preseason football game in San Diego. Hill earned the starting job for the 2009 season by beating out Alex Smith, who missed last season after re-injuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder. Head coach Mike Singletary largely chose Hill based on his play down the stretch last year: he went 5-3 over the final eight games and he also owns a 5-0 record at home in Candlestick Park.
