Rams: a QB or Suh?

I'm one of the writer's over at Buc 'Em, SBNation's Tampa Bay Bucs' blog and we were having a discussion about whether or not you guys would draft the DT Nakdjflkdsjfklfj (I kid, I kid)  Suh, out of Nebraska. Some of the guys (myself included) feel that this is the year that you guys finally pull the trigger on a legit first round QB, while others feel that Spagnuolo, being a defensive guy, will take Suh.

Just thought we would come over and get the opinion of the fan base and see which way you think they are leaning. This is the first time that many of us have actually wished our team would lose the rest of their games, but I think most of us feel that this season is a lost cause and Suh is the 2nd coming of Warren Sapp. Now that Cleveland has helped us out by taking down the much maligned Steelers, we would also appreciate it if your Rams could take all the guessing out of the situation and get a win!

Good luck and thanks in advance for any response this gets.

If the rams get the first overall pick, we should take Suh. There are plenty of qb’s we could make a move on instead of the draft.

by jesus72 on Dec 14, 2009 4:39 PM CST reply actions

Plenty of QBs in round 2 if we go that route.

Some speculate that Bulger might still be around next year. He is “legit” with help around him.

It’s Suh. In my opinion, he’s the only player, not just DT, but player worth a top 5 pick this year. Him and Eric Berry, but we’re pretty solid at the Safety position.

A team rebuilding like ours has to draft the best player available, and in this case, with our defense allowing a horrid 147 Yards Per Game on the ground, #30 in Sacks of the QB, Suh is not only the BPA, he fits a HUGE need.

Another reason to draft him is Spagnuolo’s defensive line background, which should allow Suh to maximize his talents as well as provide needed help to young potential stars DE Chris Long, and MLB James Laurinaitis. I just can’t see how we can pass on Suh if he is available.

I hope this helps. I believe it’s how most of those in the Suh camp feel. There are many in the QB camp as well, but in my opinion, our offense has been decimated by too many injuries to fully gauge how good any of our QBs are. The potential rookie cap is expected to force many junior QBs to come out early, making it a deeper than normal draft at the QB position. There should still be round 1 quality QBs in round 2, but as of now, none look the part of a top 5 selection, which makes Suh a more logical choice.

Go Rams!!!

I think the fans here at TST are split on that question

i for one think if Suh is available we need to snatch that beast up and take a qb in the second rd, or a qb from FA. So come on Buc’s get them wins!

Assuming we pick first Suh

Because I don’t see him dropping down to the second pick.

Lockers back in school

I think this increases our chances at taking Suh. Although what we want here at tst and what the Rams do may not be similar at all. Our best shot at a win is against a Cards team that may not have anything to play for in week 16. A second string team is the only hope for a win we have.

by dbcouver on Dec 14, 2009 6:01 PM CST reply actions

the answer is suh

unlike other years, there is no slam dunk first pick franchise QB available in this draft (sam bradford was one, until he got hurt). there are plenty of good quarterbacks in the draft (bradford, clausen, etc.), but none (in my opinion) that warrant a top five pick, much less a top pick.

with that being said, if the rams get the top pick i can almost guarantee they will take suh. the rams defensive line is second among their problems to fix especially the interior. suh takes care of a bunch of problems for the rams, and really allows for them to create a decent defensive line around him. in all honesty, i’m really hoping tampa can pull it out this weekend so the rams know they have the first pick.

jd is legend for Cardinals' closer 2010!!

I agree with you

If the Rams want a QB, they trade down to pick one up, not only could they get another 1st rounder this year or next year, they also save some coin by the move.

There isn’t a team in the league, IMO that passes on Suh. Us Bucs fans can only hope the Rams get a win because you hold the tie breaker (easier schedule).

Crazy how both teams went from the top to the bottom so fast, I hate thinking about having a top 10 pick not to mention top 5 or even top 2, urgh.

by bucnut1 on Dec 15, 2009 1:20 PM CST up reply actions

Suh

no quarterback is worth that risk. Suh is a incredible player that will make impact for years to come mine as well.

by keeperskillz24 on Dec 14, 2009 10:39 PM CST reply actions

Suh is our guy

I don’t know about the fan base but from what I’ve been hearing and seeing from the Rams organization and team it seems almost inevitable that if we have the chance, Suh will be picked by the Rams. I am still on the fence on which way to go, after seeing us with zero options at quarterback but also with a defense that looks poised to give up more points every week, I have a feeling we go best player available, and that would have to be Suh.

With all that said, I still want us to win some more games (my roomate’s a Browns fan…he’s been rubbing it in my face all week) and maybe let the Browns go first, take Clausen off the board, so the real choice becomes Bradford or Suh for us Rams. PS Tampa, you guys look pretty good already stop getting so greedy, jk.

by kinzav29 on Dec 15, 2009 12:08 AM CST reply actions

I want Suh

But what have you seen from the Rams that says thats the way they will go. I’ve heard it from us fans, several mocks, Several other sports sites, ESPN, SI, other sportswriters, etc. but not the Rams. Like I say, I hope thats who we get, I just haven’t heard anyone from the organization even mention, imply or even indirectly hint at which way we may go.

by dbcouver on Dec 16, 2009 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

I kind of figured this is the response we would get..

So its time for some good old fashion smack talk!! Ready??

WE SUCK!! you guys ROCK!! Rams are MUCH better than the Bucs. Go Rams.

this is wierd

Suh

It’s a no brainer for the Rams…We can’t afford not to take the best player available. This team has too many holes to take a shot on a QB. We can get a QB in the 2nd Round (Maybe McCoy) or sign Vick. Bring the Big Suh to St. Lou

by ksmooth on Dec 15, 2009 2:39 PM CST reply actions

Suh. No other choice makes sense at #1.

And let’s get Null a lot of reps with the 1’s.

by CoachConnors on Dec 15, 2009 3:49 PM CST reply actions

Suh a must have

Suh dominates the line of scrimmage and thats what the rams need. The would allow the rams to move Carriker to his natural defensive end position. We have no true proven playmakers at reciever so a QB won’t be a smart pick.

by jross21 on Dec 15, 2009 3:53 PM CST reply actions

Suh

he is the only guy I would deem NFL ready.

Why is patience a virtue and procrastination a sin...I mean whats wrong with patiently procrastionating?

by Go_Blues on Dec 15, 2009 4:22 PM CST reply actions

mm i disagree

suh is amazing but didnt glenn dorsey get this much hype. jim hasslet didnt wanna pass up on him saying hes a once in every ten years d lineman. i say we go the dungy way. tony dungy is a defensive coach and his way of drafting is simple. pick offense over defense because you know as a defensive coach that you can develop players or draft defensive players in the later rounds. we trade down and get clausen. but the thing is there is no offensive player that says draft me im special. maybe suh is the right answer… maybe another glenn dorsey but im sure we will pick the right one. we need to focus on the later rounds where they drafted horrible! picking up null horrible… not drafting duke robinson horrible… bradley fletcher? who is that kid. i think graham harrel could of done better than hull did. draft better in the later rounds those are the true gems.

by rams3!!! on Dec 15, 2009 9:38 PM CST reply actions

Bradley Fletcher was our best CB

before he got hurt. What do you mean “who is that kid”? C’mon, our top three picks this year all proved out pretty well, and the fourth pick is beginning to show he can play as well.

by andyrose on Dec 15, 2009 11:46 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly...

…what do you mean man? I love Ron Bartell but Fletcher was arguably outplaying him at the time he went down. Darell Scott has shown signs. Who knows what we could have gotten out of Brooks Foster had he played.

I think we need a big target Wide Receiver next year.

Go Rams!

Danario Alexander

4th round.
Let’s hope.

Can't think of a good sig

by Carneros on Dec 16, 2009 7:20 PM CST up reply actions

Scouts Inc has him the 14th best WR

You can see the rankings here. I think it’s open, not membership. They don’t have his draft card filled out yet but I’m sure they will as the year goes on.

I haven’t seen a mock draft go down to the 4th round yet. Of the ones I do see, all are just 1 round long at this point, and almost all have Suh going to St. Lou in the first.

by CoachConnors on Dec 16, 2009 8:30 PM CST up reply actions

So are you saying he won't be there in the 4th?

Or he can be had later or that you’re not sure?
I think with a good combine third round sounds reasonable to the number 1 statistical WR in the nation. Not to mention he’s 6’4’’ and can run a 4.5 40. I don’t see why he would fall to the 4th but he has been projected too earlier in the year so maybe he will. I hope he will.

Can't think of a good sig

by Carneros on Dec 16, 2009 9:42 PM CST up reply actions

I'd take him in the 4th

        Not the 3rd though

by dbcouver on Dec 16, 2009 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

I think projecting 3rd or 4th rounds are never very accurate

I won’t even try. First round is hard enough.

I only meant to offer a little info on the guy.

by CoachConnors on Dec 17, 2009 11:16 AM CST up reply actions

I was just wondering what you thought

because it sounded like you were saying 4th round wasn’t the right place for him. But I guess I misunderstood. Anyway, I really hope we get him. His college numbers have to be some indication of his ability.

Can't think of a good sig

by Carneros on Dec 17, 2009 4:33 PM CST up reply actions

Honestly I can't speak to his likely draft position (yet)

It’s way too early for me. I haven’t looked at the WR field enough because I kind of doubt the Rams will be in the market for one in the early rounds (1-3), so I’ve been really focusing on top 5 overall. For me anyway, the mid to lower rounds will be a couple months before I can give an thoughtful opinion.

by CoachConnors on Dec 17, 2009 4:52 PM CST up reply actions

"pick offense over defense because you know as a defensive coach that you can develop players"

I think that’s flawed logic, because Spags needs playmakers no matter what.
I don’t think he can turn average players into difference makers just because he’s a defensive coach. And there have been questions about the position coaches abilities, and Spags is more of a system guy than a skills guy.

Playmakers are what this team desperately needs, at any and every position.
I’d love Berry, he’s my #1, but I won’t get him. I think it’s Suh, and I’m ok with that.

by CoachConnors on Dec 16, 2009 8:41 PM CST up reply actions

your right we do need playmakes

we need talent and im thinking we should go with suh and what bout dez bryant though?

by rams3!!! on Dec 16, 2009 10:16 PM CST reply actions

I think we have decent respectable Wides

Enough to get by on, at least and I think Avery will probably prove to be a better playmaker than he has been, with consistant healthy games. Since we just spent a high pick on him, and haven’t gotten to really see whether he fits the bill or not, I would guess they don’t spend another high pick on a WR yet. If they were really disappointed in him, then maybe.

Would you want to replace Carricker or Avery at this point?

by CoachConnors on Dec 17, 2009 1:19 PM CST up reply actions

why not trade down

and grab bradford top 20 pick has potential was suppose to be number 1 pick last year. quick release and i know from tape he looks like a sitting duck in the pocket but thats because he had an incredible o line. ive seen him run a couple times somewhat mobile. need more picks! trade down

by rams3!!! on Dec 16, 2009 10:25 PM CST reply actions

I'll say it again.

You can’t trade down unless someone else is willing to trade up. Who is there in this draft that would be so compelling another team would be willing to part with the picks it would take to trade up? It probably would help the Rams if they could trade down, but there isn’t anyone else who will be willing to trade up. Stop dreaming.

by andyrose on Dec 16, 2009 11:44 PM CST up reply actions

I'd like to see Rolondo McClain fall to us in the 2nd

I think he may be a bigger impact player in the long run than Suh or Berry

by dbcouver on Dec 17, 2009 12:34 AM CST reply actions

Kiper has him the top LB in the draft, #11 overall

I can’t imagine the top LB in the draft drops to the 2nd round. That’d be a hell of a fall, and I don’t think the Ram could possibly pass on him if he’s there.

by CoachConnors on Dec 17, 2009 1:26 PM CST up reply actions

what position does rolando play?

middle? or outside? and which back up running back should we take in the draft?

by rams3!!! on Dec 18, 2009 12:25 AM CST up reply actions

Hes a middle

But his speed and coverage ability allow for him to be an outside LB. He’d be a killer pass rusher, and can fly to the sideline faster than any LB I’ve seen. He’s just got a nose for the ball. I hate to make comparisons but he reminds me of Ray Lewis.

by dbcouver on Dec 18, 2009 7:24 PM CST up reply actions

If he doesn't fall to us

Its moot. If he does, I’m all for him, unless Jerry Hughes is there as well. I agree that he probably will be gone and Hughes as well. So DE is my realistic hope for top talent at our second pick. I’d be fine with QB or, depending on Smiths situation, OL. I like spending top picks on the guys up front. Iupati will probably be gone but if not….

by dbcouver on Dec 22, 2009 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

Suh only!

We can probably get a capable QB like Quinn, Vick, Kolb or, gulp, Campbell outside the draft. My preference would be one of the first two.

by edpjr on Dec 18, 2009 8:05 PM CST reply actions

not vick!

vick is horrible if we sign him i honestly wont be a rams fan anymore… what he did was pathetic and hes not even a solid qb no accuracy what so ever not a pocket qb and hes not the mike vick were use to seeing runnning around

by rams3!!! on Dec 18, 2009 10:36 PM CST reply actions

Better start picking another favorite team buddy.

And while there are murderers playing in the NFL, what Vick did with some mongrels doesn’t even register on my radar screen.

by edpjr on Dec 18, 2009 11:17 PM CST up reply actions

No way

Nothing’s impossible, but I don’t see anyway Vick comes to town. We need a unifying figure in the huddle, and that is not Vick. Spags has already shown his dislike for “me” players, and that’s exactly what Vick is. Good Lord he was complaining only a couple weeks into the season about his lack of involvement with the Eagles!

I would be happy with Kolb. Hell, even if Null proves me wrong and he’s the real deal I would be fine with that. It would certainly make things easier on the team in the draft. If Null is for real, then we take Suh first, then grab a WR in the second.

I am not sure...

Taking Suh with the first pick would be great, but we also need a QB. What are the chances that a franchise QB (i.e. McCoy or possibly Snead should he go pro) is there in the 2nd round?

by Starkey on Dec 21, 2009 10:25 AM CST reply actions

Impossible to say but it's not out of the question

Crazy things happen, but they may not be seen as franchise quarterbacks by every team that needs one…..or, they may gamble that they’ll be there in their second round spot….

by CoachConnors on Dec 21, 2009 7:15 PM CST up reply actions

If I was the Bucs GM

I’d offer our 3 pick and our QB Josh Johnson for your number 1 pick. And before you totally dismiss the idea you need to remember that Andy Reid had nothing but good things to say about the kid when we played the Eagles.

by bucfanlostiniowa on Jan 3, 2010 11:13 PM CST reply actions

Since you're 3rd in draft order

You’d have to give up your 2nd and 3rd rounders. Doesn’t sound very feasible to me
