Grading Spagnuolo at the halfway point

We're officially at the halfway point of the season for the St. Louis Rams, and that means evaluation. Let's take the pulse of fan nation this morning...with an approval poll.

Head coach Steve Spagnuolo got his first win last week against Detroit, in case you hadn't heard. It's been a tough season for the rookie head coach. He did inherit a roster with major talent needs and a small budget for free agency and just one draft to try and address some of those needs.

So let's grade the coach. Before you make your mark, consider things like the talent, using the players he has, his assistants, the character of the team and their response, and all of those other intangibles that go into the making of a head coach.

Spags gets a B

Spags has taught this team to fight and show effort on this field, while unloading a lot of talent onto other teams. Neither Has-lost or Loser-hand could get this effort from these players. That alone deserves an A.

However, although Spags has seen a lot of time on the sidelines, he still is lacking in some phases of coaching. Players were undisciplined at the start of the season (Barron and Richie), he’s made questionable decisions (not running Jackson enough, several bad ones at the Washington game, we could have pulled a W in Jax), and needs to evaluate his players better to see if they have a future in St Louis (Null & he definitely needs to talk some sense to OJ). Even though it is his first year, Spags is not green to the game. This deserves a C.

Overall, I give him a B.

The one move I really question...

…is Smith at RT. But that feeling is oddly crushed because of how well (yes, well) Alex Barron has played. The video highlight of Dwight Freeney zipping by Smith doesn’t help either, but he IS the LT of the future, so idk how this is going to work. Tha being said, I almost don’t want to see an adjustment to our O-Line after they played so well the last game.

He gets a B+ from me because a lesser man would’ve broken down into tears with this level of talent.

B

Even though thiers a possibilty that this might be our only win and have a worse record then last year. I think letting go some of these players that plagued us in the past and all the new faces he brought in have done alot of good for this franchise. His game decisions im still undecided about and i really think they should be more agressive and demand to see what thier players can do and see if they’re worth keeping around. Still another half to play lets give em hell

Despite 1-7, I gave him a "C"

This team is bereft of talent, but I have really questioned some of the play-calling which goes to his choices of OC and DC. A few innovative plays may’ve won the Redskin and Jaguar games. 3-5 would’ve been a solid “A”

i think the playcalling is getting better

like you said, “a few innovative plays may have won the Redskin and Jaguar games,” and this is certaintly true. the rams finally ran an innovative play against detroit, and low and behold, they won the game.

while shurmur has been lacking on the deep pass calls all year and still his, he seems to finally know how to correctly use steven jackson in all phases of the game. he gets him the ball as much as possible, and that has really lifted the rams the past 2 of 3 games. on the deep route calls, he can’t really call them without donnie avery, and his health has been sketchy at best. he did call that flea flicker against indy, and that worked perfectly. if donnie is healthy, i look to see more of those calls in the second half of the season.

on defense, the rams run defense has been solid all year. unfortunately, the pass defense and pass rushing has left something to be desired. some of this is on the coordinator, but the unit as a whole is simply devoid of much talent. flajole will continue to improve as DC.

spags gets a B.

After the win

We would probably win the WAS/JAX games this time around.

A few less drops

AND ONE LESS FUMBLE ON THE 6 YARD LINE! Washington should have been a win. But it wasn’t. Damn you Fumbles.

Spags gets an A from me-for what thats worth

Here’s the way I think Spags is thinking. He knows full well that this team is NOT devoid of talent. In fact, many of them have so much ability that a Rookie can and does over-run the play. To much juice flowing, bad angles, etc. All that is coachable. Spags knows that the Rookies often blow a play for a vet, by showing their hand to soon. He keeps everything toned down and a little slower as a teaching tool as much as injecting Look-React rather than Kneejerk or think-analyze. Spags doesn’t go for win-win at all cost for this year. He has said so many times. This year we lose, next year we win.

The more I read about what he's doing on Mon-thru-Sat, the more I think he's an A - so far

I’ve looked into this quite a bit lately. I think he’s doing everything I hoped he’d do before the season. I think he has handled the highest priorities in an “A” manner. I think the assistants issue cannot be graded to severely yet, not enough to drop him to a B, but that could end up being his weakest area and change his grade 2 months from now.

He’s built the best he could with what he has, he has them believing in the program which is HUGE, and there are decsisions left to make about what to do with certain players that will definitley have impact on his end of season grade….but so far I feel he has accomplished the highest priorities at a level above B.

In a seperate thread I lamented that the Defense needs to be lead by the most talented players getting it done on the field…..leading with their play….and the Detroit game was clear evidence that is not a problem on offense.

My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember Is thinking, I want to be like them

Can i make a tottaly off topic statement?

3K, Coachconners, Vanram, TackleBox and others who comment on turfshowtimes. You guys are brilliant i was just browsing through other forums and none of them have the in depth coverage nor the fan base like we do. Just thought id give a shout out to the future dynasty ram team and the fellow fans that report it and analyze it better then anyone in the business period!

I'd give spags an A-

I think that Spags’s coaching philosophy has been worth an A+ grading for the simple reason that he is getting his players on board. I believe that he prepares the team hard evry week for the games but I think that he’s not trying to get some quick success. I don’t think he’s looking at other coaches like Josh McDaniel or rookie coaches from last year who had quick succes(I.e Tony Sparano) and trying to just get us rams fans a quick fix. He’s determined to not only build this team for a future playoff team, but a dominate team in the league. He knows his team is lacking the talent on both sides of the ball but he’s bringing in character guys and a group of youn g players who will be clicking on the same cylinders that creates chemistry with one another.

The only thing I would have to say negatively is that he needs to veto some of the calls that shurmer is calling. Especially in the redzone. When we get into the redzone, with the current team we have, we need to give it to #39. A few of those calls and we win against Jax and wash

Another thought-

In previous years, an injury at ANY position threw the team out of sync and timing. Under spags player re-locations, only one or two injured players bothered us at all, and sometimes it was even an upgrade. Spags is building a method of beef as a [rotation team] instead of having a [second string] for injured players. I’ m diggin it! GO RAMS!!!
