"Just Win Baby!" errr... Or Not?
"Winning Isn't everything, It's the ONLY thing" - True for us now Mr. Lombardi?
Well, the turning point has arrived. Whether you were a Bulger supporter or not, you knew this day was coming. The day we officially put an end to the old era, and a start to the Spagnuolo era.
Yes we have started a new era, but with Bulger behind center as our team leader it was hard to really say it was completely started.
Whether or not Bulger is back next year is questionable, however I think we all can agree it looks extremely grim.
Here is what I wonder... and I'm curious on what all of TST'ers think.
We have 6 games left in the season. As much as I love to see us win, wouldn't you rather see us play competitive football, and end the season at 1-15 to preserve a high draft pick?
I'm curious about draft projections, where we'd fall etc so if anyone wants to chime in and discuss the possibilities, PLEASE feel free because i'm all ears.
In the meantime, please vote YES for those who want to see us at 1-15 and a high draft pick, or NO for those who just want us to win as many as we can (care less about draft spot) and please post your reasoning.
I'm sure we'll hear from Mel Kiper, none other than 3k himself.

No way
Get the Ws. We’re still going to end up with a pick loaded with talent, and if we get that at half the cost of the #1 pick, great. If a QB goes #1 overall, the nature of the rookie salary trend demands something bigger than Stafford’s megacontract. Rifriculous.
Besides, the goal for the rest of this season shouldn’t be wins or draft position. It should be complete evaluation at the NFL level. We need to see plenty of Null, Darby, Gibson, Goldberg, Fells, Scott, Wade and King. If we go into week 1 of the 2010 season and still have questions about these guys, we have misused the rest of this season.

So what you're saying is
say we win 2 more games.. this week, and san fran we’ll say… we’ll be 3-13
we’ll be out of the top 5 I would bet… we’d still get a quality player (suh be gone, and the top qb rated by most) and pay a lot less.
Also, you mentioned a list of guys we need to look at the rest of the year… Darby shouldn’t be on the list… don’t feel he’s a solid #2 do you??
Null… will we get a look???

Lions have 2 wins, raiders have 3,
Tennessee is winning. i doubt we’ll drop out of the top 5. Other teams with us will be the seahawks, browns and bucs. I expect all three to win another game just because the NFL is so close from top to bottom. Even the skins have 3 wins.

I'll be damned if we lose to the Seabags this weekend
I hate the Seahawks sooooooooooo much. I would trade away a potentiality draft spot just to see them beat the Bags at home.
The name's Rams, St. Louis Rams.

Please find a way to beat Sheattle AND SF!
I doubt we have much of a chance in the other four games, so we’ll still get our high draft pick. Let’s just hope it’s not another Alex Barron, Tye Hill, Adam Carriker or Chris long type…. We need more Smith and Laurantis types – about 20 of ’em.

What is the tie break that decides who gets the higher pick?
I seem to recall that the team that played the weakest schedule gets the higher pick but I am not sure. If so, as things stand now we should have a real shot at the top pick since our division is weaker than TB’s or Cleveland’s.
If we do get the top pick do we take Suh or somebody else?

It is SoS
That’s probably the hardest thing in my mock drafts is predicting the rest of everyone’s schedules and then calculating the SoS.

As far as who we'll take
3k mentioned in another post that the media will be pushing us to take a QB and it’s already started. John Clayton was saying it’s our priority now that Bulger is done and while I can’t argue it’s “one” of our priorities, I don’t feel it’s a necessity.
Not with free agency and also not knowing what Null has.
I guess we won’t really know until after the season totally. But it’s no secret; I like Suh.

We habe to pick before Tampa to get Suh
Which means no more winning

I'd rather win a couple
Rams have had a high pick in several drafts now; they cost quite a bit, literally.

every person who steps foot on that field is a competitor
and competitors play to win. i’d be ecstatic if we could finish 50/50 in the division.

Sooner or later, we will have a young QB playing his first game in the NFL
It could be Null this year, it could be a draft pick next year…even if we sign a Jason Campbell stopgap, it still has to happen sooner or later.
For all the talk about “no looking at Null, just play to win”, please understand, evaluating a young QB is going to eventually happen.
The only way out of that would be to sing a clear cut, long-term solution veteran. I guess that could happen, but I think the chances are very small indeed.

I think the pick we want
may be gone by the second pick.

I would rather finish ahead of Tampa Bay, Cleveland, and Detroit
and take Clausen with the 4th pick then take Suh with the first pick, because of the money. But what if Clausen doesn’t come out? Then I would rather have the first pick to take Suh. If Clausen does come out and Brady Quinn doesn’t play well the rest of the year, does Cleveland take him? No one knows right now if he will come out and no one knows if all the teams in front of us will pass on Clausen, this uncertainty is why I want the first pick, because it means I will get Suh or Clausen.

Here's and idea I think worth looking into
First off, we need to win another game or two for this to work most likely. So let’s say we end up with the 5th pick in the draft. We trade down around 8-15 spots, depending on what we think we can get. Hopefully that can get us a third, if not at least a fourth rounder. Then we draft Brandon LaFell. He is the biggest, number 1 hyped guy in the draft. I like him. So that fills our WR void. Then round two, we take D-line. Round 3 we will have two picks now, assuming we went from 5 to a pick 15-25, and we also got a third rounder from them. We should go D-line/LB/CB with this pick. We need defense. Then with the other third rounder, assuming its later in the round, we could select Noel Devine. We could also select defense here and hope Devine is around 10 or so picks later with our 4th rounder. So that gives us, #1 Receiver, D-line upgrade(s), a Darren Sproles, and a serviceable D-lineman, LB, or CB. Rounds 5-7 where we have 5 picks can be used for whatever since they are virtually unpredictable, but one should be used on a QB, maybe LeFevour, some mocks have him falling to the 6th round. So, this draft upgrades our offense in a huge way, giving us that #1 WR, and a scat back. Hopefully we can upgrade a lot through FA defensively. That biggest flaw with this scenario is QB. I don’t want to waste a first rounder on a weak QB class. Being the best of a class does not make you a good Franchice QB. Sign Campbell or Pennington, or keep Boller, or find your Warner in Null, and lets get some offense back. Of course even the Saints wouldn’t have a good offense with Pat Shurmer, so he needs to go. 2010 is over if that doesn’t happen.

If we don't win any more games
Then take Suh if possible, if not, try and trade down.

I like the idea of avoiding a QB in the first round
None of this class’s QBs are worth spending record money on. WIth the O-line solidifying, a decent #2 RB in the middle rounds and a WR should give virtually any QB the ability to get some yards in the air. Plus, this whole rebuilding is going to take more than one draft. Get a franchise QB later.

I don't think
i’ve been this excited about a draft like I am next years. Honestly, this will be the most crucial draft of the Spags era… remember, this will be his second.
As Parcels once said, “if i’m gonna cook, shouldn’t i be involved in buying the groceries?”
After seeing Spags first draft, just grabbing Laurenitis makes him an iron chef. I can’t wait to see how April plays out.
Can’t forget Devaney here either (shout out)

Any one still think Snead's an option?
He’s looked pretty bad at Ole Miss this year but he still faces SEC defenses every week. If he falls to maybe 2-4th round he might be worth an investment. Really strong arm, fairly mobile, good size, just not real smart with his throws (sounds a lot like Stafford w/o the price tag). You think he’s worth a look or has he proven he’s not an NFL starter with this college season?
by kinzav29 on Nov 26, 2009 10:56 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I liket Snead if he does fall later...
but I still maintain that QB should be avoided in the top rounds (see above) unless its an outright steal.

Wins > High draft pick
Most of the time, the team with the high draft picks are known as ones who suck. We don’t need that associated with us.

I understand, but I'm saying out of a normal perspective
I would rather have the team try to win games than lose a lot just to get a high draft pick

and trade picks for either Brady Quinn or Mike Vick at QB.
