Burton to IR

The St. Louis Rams will put WR Keenan Burton on the injured reserve list with a patella injury, ending his sophomore season.

This deals the Rams' receiving corps a pretty serious blow. Prior to this game they had just five receivers on the active roster; now, it's just four. They have Sean Walker on the practice squad, and he'll likely be promoted. It's a tough blow for Burton's career, which has been marked more by the injuries than stats. Now, the question is whether or not they'll sign, or find, anyone on the wire.

He's played in at least 2 games.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Hey Box-

You’re gonna have to shout “HE HAS PLAYED!!” otherwise, you’ll have to keep posting it.

heh...

yeah. Although I did look it up and he hasn’t played in 2 games like I had thought, but just one game. I remember seeing him get targeted once, i think.

Burton going to have to hustle to make next year's squad, IMO...

With Avery, Gibson, Robinson, Foster and Amendola as probable returnees, and who ever the Rams get in the draft thrown into the mix, even if they keep six wideouts on the opening day roster, he seems to be facing long odds…if Martin pans out, it gets more difficult…bottom line is you gotta be on the field.

I agree.

The more I watch the receivers we’ve picked up, the further down the list I can see Keenan Burton going. He’s made mistakes I’d only allow new guys to the system to make. Not guys who went through mini camp, training camp and preseason.

I agree too.

Out of all the receivers we have I think Burton has the best chance of going. His best chance is to beat out Foster or Martin, since they are both unproven, but I’d think they’d both have advantages over him because of who they were drafted by or how big they are. If we get a different returner he might also have a chance to beat out Amendola, as much as I hate to say it.

The 53 as one have become the 53 that won.

Ruvell Martin.

I really think Ruvell Martin is getting an unfair shake here. He’ll get his playing time, but you guys have to realize, he’s new to the system.

Danny Amendola and Brandon Gibson were acquired for a reason. They know the system and know the terminology. So, they automatically jump ahead of Martin and can contribute right away.

Martin will be fine. He’s been brought along slowly and since the Rams only seem interested in dressing 4 receivers, they’ve had the “luxury” of not dressing him and allowing him to study the system more.

Since Gibson was acquired, Martin has been the 5th receiver. Now, he’ll get his opportunity to perform. The problem is, he’ll be considered the 4th receiver and we don’t run a whole lot of 4 WR sets.

Gibson (and the Rams, in all honesty) were fortunate yesterday that Burton got injured. He wouldn’t have seen the field nearly as much had Burton been healthy.

Anyway, please guys just realize where he’s come from and who you’re comparing him to. He’s the only reciever on the roster who didn’t go through training camp in this system and he’s been learning it on the fly since being acquired.

And we can't give up on a 6'4" WR very quickly

Just his size alone will bring a whole ‘nuther dimension to our red zone corner-of-the-end-zone attack, even if he only has average hands. There’s not that many really good WR’s of that size, I’m sure the coaches are eager to spend some time working with him and seeing what he can bring. The timing on these kinds of plays can take a while to develop.

From everything I've heard

He’s big and has good hands. And that’s about it. He’s a good guy and dependable. He’s not overly fast or quick and not necessarily a good leaper or will over-power anyone.

He should be a good #3 (at best) WR. He’s never going to be a “difference maker” but he’s a good role player.

Are these bad things? No. But I wouldn’t have too high expectations just because of his size.

Nevertheless, I’m excited to see him finally get some opportunities although I don’ think he’ll get nearly the chances people think he will. We just don’t run enough 4 WR sets to accommodate him seeing a lot of passes.

well i guess we get to see what ruvell martin is made of

he’ll slide into the #4 role, with gibson moving up to #2/3. sean walker will likely be promoted from the practice squad to take the inactive role.

Don't hold your breath.

Our #4 doesn’t get a whole lot of action. As a matter of fact, Martin’s been the #4 once this year and he was barely seen.

The only reason Gibson was targeted as much as he was yesterday is because of the Burton injury. Once he got that first catch, I think Bulger immediately had confidence in him. Plus, he was probably doing a better job of getting open than Amendola.

Next year

Like tbell said, this team will be deep at WR, so Burton will have a tougher time making the club. With all of these young WR’s coming back, I don’t see us drafting one now that Gibson may be for real. Rather, a veteran FA might be the way to go, if we even add one. With Gibson, Robinson, Avery, Burton, Amendola, Martin, and Foster set to be on the opening day training camp roster, I just don’t see us drafting one. We need a good #2 RB in the draft far more than we will need another WR next year.

Keep looking at other practice squads

For this year anyway. Theres still some young talent out there.

Remember when-

At the start of this season, us posters and fans were holding our collective breath about being so thin and weak at WR. It now seems we will be swimming in talent at WR throughout the rest of the season and next year. Go figure.
