I miss Mike Martz
I realized today how much I miss Mike Martz and his approach to offense. What he did with Rams was remarkable. You can argue that the Rams team was loaded with talent but he got quite good production when he served as the OC in Detroit and San Francisco with much more limited talent. I have had enough with the low-risk, short yardage type of offense which to me is too timid and gutless. Unless Shurmur asks Bulger for Martz's playbook and incorporates several gutsy plays, I cannot think of a single game this season after which I will not feel humuliated. Coach Martz, where are you?

Who had October 6, 2009 in the pool?

I was never anti-Martz
Sure there were annoyances, often major annoyances, but we also played competitive football that was often very fun to watch.
I remember back when he left and most people seemed to think he was the problem with the Rams and laughed when Martz claimed he was surrounded by a bunch of crazy idiots in the front office. I think time has proven that Martz was speaking more truth than people believed at the time.

He was surrounded by "crazy idiots".
but he was one of the crazy idiots too.
Remember Eric Crouch, Steve Bellisari, and Trung Canidate were all hand-picked by Martz.

+1
idiots fighting with idiots. Thats what the Shaw FO and the Martz coaching staff morphed into.
There is a reason that Martz has been fired from his last 2 OC jobs…and it isn’t because the Rams black balled him like he loves to say.

We may not want Martz back,
but Shurmer has to go. The offense he is calling is pitiful. Hand the ball to Jackson or throw a 3 yard pass – those seem to be the only options he considers. I can’t believe we can’t get Avery down the field a few times. He caught a bunch of long throws last year and seems to know how to maneuver for the ball while it’s in the air. This isn’t high school, let’s open up the offense a little so the other team can’t have nine guys in the box all the time.

I wouldn’t mind him as a QB coach. He seem to get a lot of production out of no-names like Jon Kitna and Kurt Warner (at the time).
He could run an offense, but he couldn’t exactly run a team.
Not like he’d ever come back here anyway..

martz
whats sad is we had to learn a very valuable lession,u never realize what you have until its gone….i loved mike martz and his appoarch to offensive football…to hell with the traditional way of basic football….run run run…how about explosive, unpredictable offensive football??thats what mike martz brought to the game ,and it was exciting!!!but there were some who didnt like that and of course that made him a scape goat when things went wrong….look at our offense now and its been gradually getting worse as the seasons has past since he was forced out….as you can see your blog has hit a nerve with me,great comment.it wasnt broke so why did they have to fix it??remember THE GREATEST SHOW ON TURF never to be seen again

I feel your pain. Don't forget that
aggressive passing game opened up lanes for Marshall Faulk. What the hell are we doing running the ball all the time? How long can our only offensive threat take this abuse? For God’s sake, if wanted to see lateral passes and running game only, I would watch RUGBY.

i wouldnt want martz
honestly when he was our OC look at the talent he had around him a twelve year old could call the plays and we’d stlil be good. I agree shurmur has to go after this year if he shows no progress in the offense. We really have to find are niche and so far his ideas arent cutting it i’ll give him time but as of learned these past 3 years im not so forgiveing. Just because your friends with a guy doesn’t mean you should hire him, your a coach you have to make decisions thats best for your team. I know they can fit into your system easier and what not but that just makes it more complicated then it seems.

Not missing Martz
Granted, it was fun to watch Martz’s playcalling, but he killed QB’s. When he was in San Fran it was really brought to light. I can’t remember who they were playing at the time, but one of the announcers brought up how Martz’s playbook kills QB’s. Look at his body of work and you’ll find QB’s getting mauled on every team. In my opinion, Martz brought on the downfall of Bulger.

I don't think he's 100% responsible
but he definitely put it in motion.
It seems as if, as the years passed, Martz cared less and less about protecting the QB. He quit using fullbacks and Tight ends all while his O-lines were getting less talented or injured.
Then came Scott Linehan and it was all over for Bulger.

We could do it if we had a great offensive line
By all means we should.
Alex Barron is a bust, but we’ve spent gobs of money on Jacob Bell, Jason Smith and Jason Brown.
Jacob Bell needs some of Spagnuolo’s O-line mojo.

I sure miss the Vermeil and Martz coaching combo.
It’s kinda like how good Romeo Crennel looked when he was DC for Bill Belichick. Or how Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan hated each other personally, but coached together like a well oiled machine.
I think the 1st guy Dick Vermeil would dump is Alex Barron.
