49er's vs. Rams: Quick Reaction
Disgust? Intense pain? Things are things you should get used to as the Rams lost again today. A 35-0 shellacking certainly leaves a bunch of questions, but here are some quick notes from the game:
- After Alex Barron's bonehead penalty, he was benched in favor of John Greco. Is this the end of Barron? He seemed to be off in his own little world on the bench (probably on the field sometimes too).
- Special teams was horrible. Blocks in the back, holding on huge returns. Donnie Jones had a sub par day. Pro Bowl hopes are dwindling now..
- Shurmur haters, here are some quick numbers: 78% of the time in the first half, the Rams ran it on 1st down. They also did not cross their own 20 yard line all of the 3rd quarter. Ouch.
- I'm going to go ahead and say I was right. Glen Coffee and the running game was almost a no-show for the 49er's, who desperately need Frank Gore back. Coffee averaged 3.1 YPC and barely crossed the 3 yard mark because he had some big runs after the game was over. Vernon Davis was the #1 target.
- Kyle Boller isn't the answer. Keith Null sure looked up when Boller got hit hard late in the game.
That's all for now, look for more in-depth 3k and VanRam analysis shortly. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

week 1?
I did a mock draft once the 2009 draft was over. Are you guys interested in 2.0?
Your uncle molests collies.

Sure
It’ll give us something somewhat positive to talk about.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
Why not..? But we should still trade our draft picks for proven NFL players.
We can’t take anymore draft busts. There’s no need to restate the names of our multiple draft failures. We’re just not the type of organization to take the best available, most talented players. We always try to “fill a need” unsuccessfully.
uhhhh 35 - 0?
i fell asleep at halftime…. what the hell happened?
And yet
despite the final score, it was actually a game for the first half. The defense played pretty well, albeit against a Gore-less team (so a little hard to judge). But they actually touched the QB, sacking him no less.
23 rushes, 79 yards for Mr. Jackson. Slightly better than Mr. Coffee, but disappointing for supposedly such a great back.
What’s the record for number of games lost in a row?
+1
the game should have been tied at halftime (either 0-0 or 3-3). what people aren’t going to realize from this game is how damn well the defense played. they’re going to see those 35 points and immediately think “the rams suck on both sides of the ball again,” but in this case, it simply isn’t true. the 49ers scored 21 direct points off of special teams and offensive mistakes alone. it’s like the rams started the game down 21-0. yeah, the defense gave up 14 points, but that’s going to happen, especially after losing any purpose to play. and if you defense only gives up 14 points in an NFL game, chances are you should win the game.
and that’s what makes this team so frustrating. the defense played their asses off today but the offense decided to take the day off. no, the defense didn’t create any turnovers, but they got off the field and shut the 49ers out in the first half. i don’t think i’ve ever seen a team whose defense was so good but offense was so bad in my entire life. that’s why i have confidence in spags in the future. the rams are going to have games like this this year, but they are a few offensive weapons away from having a good team. the rams have to keep their heads up.

If you watch UCLA for the last 4 years
you’d see the same pattern. The problem with such an imbalance is that you start to believe you can actually win a game.
35-0 ohhh my aching head and nauseous gut....
And these guys are getting paid (well) for embarassing their fans EVERY week. Today’s shellacking by the 49ers was without Gore too. Think about next week against Favre and Petersen or the week after with Manning and Addai. Yecch. This team is putrid through and through.
hey the "high school caliber" d-line came to play today
tough to bitch about the defense this week. what are you going to go after?

Yes! it was a total team meltdown. No one and I mean no one played good including...
Donnie Jones. Josh Brown, SJax or anybody on defense. Getting a few sacks doesn’t begin to make up for getting bombed. Furthermore, I’ve had it with your wise-ass cracks kid. You can stick it where the sun don’t shine. But don’t forget to apologize for the Rams today. Everybody’s waiting.
i'm done engaging you, this will be my last post on the topic
but you can’t say that no one on the defense played well today. the entire 49ers offense was contained, and they only gave up 14 points. like i said above, if your defense only gives up 14 points, you should be able to win the game. saying no one on the defense played well today is just asinine. i’m simply convinced you don’t even watch the games.
as for telling me to “stick it where the sun don’t shine,” i’m glad you’ve found a way to have civil discussion with me!
good day.

Thanks for that promise... I'n not having anymore civil discussions with you.
btw. the Rams defense gave up only 13 points in the Super Bowl we lost to NE. You still have to outscore the other team to win.
OK, I’m all for going back and forth, but this is ridiculous man. You’re lack of arguing skills is appalling. I’m talking philosophy 101 stuff right now.
Not only do you go John Madden on us and point out that the team needs to outscore the team to win, but you reference a game that has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE 2009 RAMS. Do you know what? The 70’s era Rams had a bad day too- let’s blame that shit on Bulger too. You seem to do it anyway.
The defense played well considering. It has to be demoralizing to see your efforts go NOWHERE day in and day out, and I’m sure that has an affect on the team.
Standing on some soap box and bitching about how nobody does shit isn’t constructive, intelligent and makes me think all you do is look at the box score after the game is over.
Spagamania is in full bloom
just because we lost the game
doesn’t mean that our defense didn’t play well. If our defense gives up a 37-yard field goal because the offense through an interception at the 20 and we lose 3-0 does that mean our defense played poorly? Just because our ST and O played terrible and lost us the game doesn’t mean the defense was bad.
SHURMUR NEEDS TO GO
he was in on several plays
there’s a reason the run was stopped and sacks were made. if chris long didn’t play well, the unit as a whole wouldn’t have played as well as they did.

Did Chris Long play?
I’m looking at the stats and his name doesn’t come up. Not even 1 tackle?
Lived in LA during the Rams and Raiders days. Now based in NorCal, I am still a die hard Rams fan and Raiders season ticket holder.
thats just not good enough
return on the investment the Rams have made in him.

I'm beginning to think that like some of the kids on here, you'll defend...
…the Rams even though they’re the worst team in pro-football.
I’ll defend this team anyday, regardless of how they play. That is what a fans does.
Spagamania is in full bloom
If fans defend their putrid play - what incentive is there to improve?
These guys, especially Bulger, SJax, Jason Smith, Chris Long, etc. are making gazillions of $$$. Fans, just like parents, teachers, and coaches, have to be critical sometimes when conditions necessitate.
Jason Smith and Bulger didn’t even play today- and SJax is our best player, even if he has a shitty day.
I probably should’ve clarified and you’re right but I was trying to say their are still good players on this team. You can’t lump everyone together. Some players play good regardless of the horrible team they are on.
I’ll give you that though. You’re right +1 edpjr.
Spagamania is in full bloom
I don't think players/coaches/owners win for the fans
They win for money/ego/pride/competitiveness/fun. Mostly money though.
Then Bulger, the $65M man, should've won us 3 Super Bowls.
There’s enough $$$ invested in Bulger, SJax, Jason Smith, Jason Brown, Otogwe, Bartell, Butler, Jacob Bell, Chris Long, Adam Carriker, Josh Brown, et. al, to pay down the national debt.
hard to believe he didn't get one tackle
he was in on blitz packages all day and the line stopped the run for the majority of the day. it’s hard to pinpoint what exactly happened. he had to have played well though.

The defense did
show up today, which was good news. Bad news is the offense couldn’t get anything going. I wonder why Null didn’t get an opportunity in the 4th. It was pretty much over, so why not see what he can do?!?
I still see the play calling as horrific. I know Spags is defensive minded, but we need more attention to how the offense prepares their game plan. I’m very interested to see the play break downs for this game. Let’s see some numbers.
Chris Long needs to lose his starting job. He needs to earn his way on this team. I thought he’d have a break out year, but so far it doesn’t look like it. Let’s see what Spags does with this coming up draft. I hate to say it, but I’m already looking forward do the draft.
Question?
Who takes Long’s place? We need to be careful not to wear out Little or Hall…both are getting older and are injury prone. The reality is that we are limited on our choices.
But, to be frank Long was the reason for two sacks today. He helped collapse the pocket for Ah You and I think it was Larry Grants. They were pretty close to each other. In fact, Long diving at Hill’s left side forced him right into Grant.
I just don't see how anyone can defend this team and/or coaching staff
Yes, the defense certainly played hard today. They have played well all year long, not their fault they are on the field the entire game. That said – we can’t score. We fumble the ball, we throw interceptions, we hold, we’re offsides, we have too many men on the field. It’s disgusting. It wouldn’t be acceptable for a high school team and this is our professional team? I don’t see how they can dig themselves any bigger of a hole
Check in with StlCardinalsFang or Ram_Rod - they can defend the team
Even if the “D” did play a little better, they’re still atrocious. They absolutely cannot get off the field on a 3rd and long situation. And, there were no fumbles created or INT’s made. And don’t forget the 49ers were without Frank Gore today. That would be like us minus SJax.
give me a third and long today before the game was over that the defense did not get off the field

are you serious
i guess 4/13 conversion rate for the niners means our d couldnt get a stop. think before u comment. i want to see bulger back.. boller is terrible. im so glad he could get 108 yards for us. and everyone complained about bulgers 180 yard days. and last i checked bulger hasnt thrown a pick yet. i blame this lack of production on the oc and hc. this run run throw short is not working! run run and mix up the throws. the rams have to go deep to stretch the field. take a chance. what do we have to lose. spags looks to be very conservative. the defense blitzed more and got better pressure this week. kudos to spags and flajole. take a chance on the offense tho
Boller is terrible, but Bulger's no better.
Recall his amazing stats against Washington; 15-28 for 119 yards? In two+ games he got us 7 points and that was before Laurent Robinson went down. I say punt Bulger and Boller both and see if Null’s got anything. Bulger is long gone next season anyway because of his absurd salary. By the stats, the Ram “D” was better today only allowing about 250 yards and recording 4 sacks (of course the 49ers were without Frank Gore). But we didn’t create any fumbles or make any interceptions either. Meanwhile, our offense didn’t even break 200 yards, and had mulitple INTs and fumbles. We also gave up 5 sacks. Our special teams sucked and we were penalized for 73 yards versus 33. That’s a total team failure, coaching included. I did completely miss the 4/13 3rd down conversion rate for the 49ers. I guess I was rattled by the series when we had them 2nd and 23 in the 1st half and they converted on 3rd down. Even so, the 49ers had 13 first downs and we had only 9. Chris Long was invisible again – No Tackles.
You’re absolutely right. Neither has done much. Boller probably won’t make it next year, but Bulger is a different story.
I wouldn’t want him to start if he can’t get it together (this year is it for him), but we would only save something like 50,000 dollars if we dumped him. Might as well keep him around as a backup, he has experience.
Spagamania is in full bloom
completely agree
the penalties are RIDICULOUS and that stems from the coaching. the only high light was our d but that was a let down in situations. that 2nd and 23 they converted had me livid. and what was with that 4th and 4 late in the game, why throw 20ft over averys head when they could have screened it or slanted it. im sure boller had a better option. avery was locked down on that route. lets face it. bulger will not be gone next year. the rams will take bradford 1st pick but he will NOT start the 1st game. throwing a rookie out in horrible offense is not a good way to start his career. he will probably start week 7 or 8. unless bulger gets hurt before then. oh and a word about coaching, why do i get this high school coach sense about spags. almost like he is saying everyone do your best and have fun. every interview he says he is pleased with his team but not the out come. can we get some fire? can we get an angry guy that the players dont want to let down. 9ers have that in singletary. spags almost has a dungy like approach but spags doesnt have the talent level dungy had, spags needs to motivate and make players accountable for their actions or non actions.+1 for null
