OK, what do the Rams do now?

Let's take stock of things. As of today, we're 0-7 having lost 42-6 at home to the Super Bowl calibre Colts. Our offense netted -1 point. Our defense was blown away.  Without checking actual stats, I'm pretty sure we've scored less points and allowed more than any other NFL team so far.  Did anyone on our laughing stock D-Line even touch Peyton Manning today? I don't think so, but for sure it was Chris Long's 7th straight game without a sack. Our best defensive player; Lauranitis, got 4 tackles. That's one tackle per quarter. Our O-Line, with stars like Bell, Barron & Smith, the first being a highly paid FA acquistion and the latter two being 1st round draft picks, didn't exactly look too stellar today either.  My guess is that even the truest die-hard Marc Bulger defenders (including relatives) will have a hard time defending his performance today (or all season for that matter).  The one bright spot, as always, is SJax who must be questioning why he's playing his prime years on a team so bereft of talent, coaching, (and luck).  So, with all the blinding negativity glaring in our faces - what can we do?  First, with so few quality players on the roster, we don't need to be trading away capable guys like Will Witherspoon for an unknown player and a 5th round pick. Next, we've got to have a new QB - a leader of some kind, any kind. Bulger and Boller need to hit the road. Alex Barron and his uncaring attitude are an affront to the whole team. Despite his mediocre talent, he needs to go in the worst way. Jacob Bell needs to follow. All we can do is hope and pray that both Jason Smith and Chris Long, in which we've invested a fortune, somehow are just slow starters. Adam Carriker will not be back.  Our new QB will need someone to throw too. It's too thin counting on oft injured Avery. Burton's mediocre. Plus who knows how Laurent Robinson will return next year from his season ending injury? In addition to the players I've recommended dumping, age will knock off Leonard Little and James Hall. They don't fit in with a completely rebuilding team. Also, our coaching has disappointed - me at least. While I hate the guy, I'd rather have Mike Martz as OC than what we've got now. And, while he was a flop as a headcoach, Romeo Crennel is still out there and could be brought in as DC. So, about the only thing that can save us is a new owner(s) willing to spend mega-bucks to buy some genuine talent and experts with enough brains to make some good draft selections.  And, if that change requires moving back to LA, so be it.  I boldly predicted that the Rams would win 5-6 games this year and am extremely embarassed that it more likely going to be an 0-16 season. Yecch!

Post a letter on the training faclity that follows

Due to poor production and to much loss with out any gain. The NFL has decided to close football operations in St.Louis you will be able to pick up your check at the end of the week, but that will be your last one.

Sincerly you suck,
Roger Goodell

This should hopefully create a change in attitude

Always draft the best player available, unless you are already stacked at the position. So in our case, draft the best player available that’s not a RB. If you’re a winning team and are strong at all postitions, draft the best player available. So the Rams should take Suh first because it looks like he will be the best available player.

This year we selected the best available talent in the 2nd round and look what we got. And I’m thinking there were better OT’s available in the 2nd round than Smith, but Smith was less developed than those guys (so I’m not sure why we picked him) Think if we did that last year and this year, we’d have Curry, Lauranitus, then Suh, and someone in the second round. Our defense would be so much better. We’d be getting pressure on the QB, and we’d have a dominant front 7 of Long, Little, Ryan, Suh, Curry, Lauranitus, and what would have been Witherspoon. Can you imagine that? And then with Bartell, Atogwe, Butler, and Fletcher as our secondary, we’d be a top defense in the league possibly, at least against the run. We wouldn’t have an OT, or virtually any offensive help via the draft, but with good pickups through free agency we’d be at least an 8-8 team.

Wow, I did not think my small point about taking the best available talent would lead me into this rant. Sorry.

Reserved-- been waiting 6 weeks to have this sig, I guess I can wait 1 more

It's easier to say "best available"

than to identify it. And sure, in hindsight, things could always have been better. Hell, even Michael Jordan got passed over. But yes, given the numerous issues we have, I think between Suh, Dunlap and whatever QB they grade out highest, I think you have to pick whichever of those three you think is best.

Your uncle molests collies.

Its Suh

And last year anyone would have picked Fletcher, Null, Ogbonnaya, or Brooks way way lower than we did. It’s not just any hindsight here. Null shouldn’t be in the league yet. Neither should Ogbannaya or Brooks. These guys were picked ahead of serviceable offensive linemen, D-line and LBs. I’m not saying any are busts yet but, alternatives were obvious.

I agree

with the best availabe theory for rebuilding teams. Without a doubt we are rebuilding. Curry should have been the pick, when we decided to keep it. I know Smith has potential, but I liked 3 other OT’s in the Draft than him. Looking at the guys that were coming out this last year and those coming out next year. The year for the OT looks like next years draft will have quite a bit of them. Yet we allowed our need to dictate what our pick was going to be. Its unfortunate with so many needs that we would be willing to look passed a guy that would be considered to be the “most” NFL ready, because there is never a gaurantee in this game. Oh well, time will tell.
The reality is we need PASS RUSH to help or secondary.

Its really simple

I’m not even sure why it hasn’t been obvious to the organization. Come closer Devaney…closer…closer………..GET SOME DAMN TALENT!!!!! This is ridiculous. I watch as post season and post season go past, and we don’t pick up anybody with any kind of merit, except Jacob Bell, who is questionable in my opinion anyway. Hmmm….our receivers suck, why not trade for a REAL receiver (I’m not even going to bring up the Anquan Boldin situation). The jets did it, I don’t know why we cant. Linebackers have been flying from team to team in recent years, do we grab one? No. I don’t hear anything on ESPN in April or May about the Rams picking up anybody. How can you expect to get better if you don’t get better players? The whole “oh well, time will tell” attitude is why this team has 17 straight losses and are 0-7 now. Jesus Christ, It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this out

By the way, drafting a quarterback won’t help, he doesn’t have anyone to throw it to. Draft Dez Bryant!!!!!!!

I agree...

Talent wins – plain and simple.

the Rams have been a comedy of errors for many years except for a 3 year span when they were dubbed the greatest show on turf, but think about it they sucked before and they have really sucked since then.I have the blessing of not having their games televised out here in So. Cal but just from reading everything from blogs to the paper to watching espn and stuff it seems like even the mystical Spags hasn’t really gotten this team to do much or hasn’t even gotten a speck of a winning attitude there has he? Are the actual ST. Louis fans happy with this guy and his staff ? You all should be screaming for his head or at least his staffs, i mean i have suffered many times being a ram fan but this year is the worst by far!!!!!!

It IS the worst of times...

Sure the Rams have had bad times, especially the early-mid 1990s. But even then we could win 4-6 games per season. However, our history of winning games and going to the playoffs is actually pretty good over the last 40+ years. I made the below list from memory so it may not be 100% accurate, but it’s close. It clearly demonstrates that the last 3 years have been a travesty against the Ram heritage. We’re 5-39.

Year Record
1968 11-1-2 (playoffs)
1969 11-3 (playoffs)
1970 9-4-1
1971 8-5-1
1972 6-7-1
1973 12-2 (playoffs)
NFC West Champs 7 years straight 1973-79
1979 SB-loss
1980 11-5 (playoffs)

1984 10-6 (playoffs)
1985 11-5 (playoffs)
1986 10-6 (playoffs)
1987 7-9
1988 10-6 (playoffs)
1989 11-5 (playoffs)
1990-1998 suck1999 13-3 (SB)
