Sniffing out Jake Locker

This could be a number of teams in the NFL right now, but since the St. Louis Rams are expected to be looking for a quarterback, I think it stimulates some disucssion. From Mocking the Draft:

ESPN senior NFL writer Chris Mortensen reported on his Twitter page that one of the teams that could be looking for a quarterback has Locker tops on their early draft board.

That's Washington junior QB Jake Locker, btw. Locker has become the "hot" name in draft talk. Let's see how he fares against Cal and UCLA before we pin our future on him. I am curious as to whether or not it's the Rams who have Locker atop their draft board.

You know

When I was writing that post about Locker, I just kept thinking the Rams are that team. I’m going to dig around and see whose been scouting Washington games a lot. If it’s the Rams, I’ll let you guys know.

McNabb

I hate comparing players to other players this way but….. Locker has McNabbs skill set. He’s as tough as well.

I hope

the Rams are that team. I worry about the beating Bradford is going to take. I’m not sure about Clausen’s arm strength. I’m worried about Snead’s performance (but love his tools). Locker looks like a good investment. I wish he had played a little more college football, but he’s who I like.

Of course, I’ve never been right about anything before;)

I am torn.

I have a poor track record when it comes to the draft. Generally the guy I want ends up being a bust and I really like Jake Locker.

I'd guess Seattle

They need a QB too, with Hasselbeck being so brittle. And he’d already be in the Pacific NW, minimizing the geographic adjustment. But I’d guess we’ll be picking before Seattle, so we’ll see what happens. And a lot can happen between now and next April.

Seriously, though, it’s been great to watch this guy bloom under Sark. It’ll kill me if he goes to a division rival because I really don’t want to root against him.

casey keenum from houston we could probably get him in the second or third round maybe use our first pick on a much needed DT

case keenums stats....

in 2008 this guy had 5020 yards passing a 67 percent completion rating 44 touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 159.91….yea i wouldnt mind seeing that type of production in a rams jersey

Safe bet

arm strength

I’m just thinking out loud here. Should arm strength be that much of a factor in evaluating the QB’s in next year’s draft? Keep in mind the style of offense that we run. (short/intermediate routes, power running game, turning the ball over in the red zone)

As long as our O-Line is steady next year, I don’t think mobility and arm strength are that big of factors. (correct me if I’m wrong)

Cal and UCLA?

No offense, but don’t bother assessing Locker’s ability against Cal and UCLA, they’re both bad teams. A more reasonable critique would be to see how he does against Oregon and Oregon State.

I'll hold off--

I still want to see Knull play. Nobody knows just how good he will be untill we play him. He might be a lot better than we know. Let’s wait and see before we cast into the wild blue yonder for another rookie unknown.

Hate to burst the Locker bubble...

…but i think our needs are elsewhere, namely WR/DT. I just think Ndamukong Suh is too good to pass up in round 1, and he would fit what Spags is trying to do. Dez Bryant might now be available in rd 2 given his suspension, and I’ve heard a lot about some LeFevour guy being available in round 2. If so, that might be a better bet.

It’s obvious we need more WR talent, and a dominant defensive player up front not only helps our secondary, but it helps two key players (high picks recently): Chris Long/James Laurinaitis. A DE’s best friend is a DT that takes up blockers, and with Cliff Ryan emerging this season (seriously, check him out), we could have a REALLY good D line next year, something that would free up Animal Jr. for a monster sophomore year. We could also use an OLB now though.

I guess my point is, I’m not impressed enough by ANY of the QB prospects mentioned, and I’ve been following all of them as closely as humanly possible minus this LeFevour guy (which I’ll now follow). Locker beat my Trojans, but Barkley wasn’t there, and neither was All-American safety Taylor Mays. His impact on our defense is amazing, and I guarantee Locker would not have had as much success were he roaming the middle of the field.

Locker right now seems like he’d be a good value at the lower end of the first/top end of the second.

I agree

Even a mid level QB can look good with a top level D behind him. With the Rams, notice that our run-stuffing makes the other teams change their game plan to the long bomb which they know they can get away with.

by jb22 on Oct 21, 2009 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree.

There are a lot of questions (too many) with all of the top QB prospects for my liking. I almost feel we can get just as good of a QB later in the draft.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

by Tackle Box on Oct 21, 2009 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Suh

getting Suh could make a huge difference on our d-line. Ryan and Long will both improve with Suh in between them, and then if we could get a FA DE better the Little or even keep little for one more season then I think our D-line will be much improved. Arrellius Benn could be available round 2 pick 1. Whatever we do with our first two picks, we desperately need to get two immediate impact players. So, in other words, we need a Lauranitus type impact right away from our second rounder, and hopefully a bigger impact than Smith with our first pick. We should be able to hit with a close-to-immediate impact player in the third round since it is basically a late 2nd rounder.

by Carneros on Oct 21, 2009 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd take it one step further

and say we need impact from our top 3 picks regardless. our 4th and 5th picks if done right could be impact also.

by dbcouver on Oct 22, 2009 3:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Quarterback is not the problem.

I don’t think we need one in this year’s draft. I’d much rather take a top Wide Reciever than a QB. Bulger still has a lot left in him, we just need some recievers now. Sure, Avery is pretty good, and Burton ain’t half bad. Amendola is okay, and Tim Carter could prove some use. Brandon Gibson could end up making some contributions too. But no team has ever won with a recieving core of just average players. I can only see Avery really becoming a star, and I think drafting a great WR would be a good complement. Burton would make a fine 3rd WR, and Gibson could be pretty good too. Amendola may end up playing well, but I’d like to keep him at the bottom of the depth chart.

by StopSpe on Oct 21, 2009 3:11 PM CDT reply actions

Bulger

Is Bulger past his prime? No Doubt. But next season, he is the most talented option at QB, no matter who we select in the draft. I believe if we do draft a QB, he should sit and learn behind Bulger, which is why I believe Bulger will not be cut this offseason. Many of you point to Bulger’s immobility as a problem. But its not like Sam Bradford is gonna dodge tackles in the backfield either. If mobility is such an issue with this offensive line, why draft a QB now?

I know we’re all eager for a change at the QB position, but the fact is that even if we do select a QB in the draft, the team is not going to improve that much based on that selection, because it will not provide as an upgrade over Bulger talent-wise next season

I know you’re all going to say “Look at Matt Ryan, Flacco, Sanchez and Stafford”. Well, Matt Ryan had Roddy White, John Abrahams, and Michael Turner. Flacco had the Ravens D and Mason and Rice/Mcclain/McGahee. Sanchez has that Jets defense, the two running backs, and most importantly that Jets O-Line (and even he is struggling. Imagine if he was on the Rams) Stafford isn’t doing too well, but even he has Calvin Johnson and the young TE Pettigrew.

My point is, while it would be wise to draft a QB for the future sometime soon, we can’t just select a QB and then close our eyes and hope everything will improve for the better. I think it would be better if the Rams focused on other positions in this upcoming draft, and if a franchise QB happens to fall onto our lap (I can’t decide if there is a Matt Ryan in this year’s draft. Don’t see one yet), then by all means the Rams should draft that QB. But the one thing the Ram’s are lacking more than anything is a pass rush, and I think that the first pick should be to improve the pass rush, (DE or DT).

by jb22 on Oct 21, 2009 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

i agree on all points

as i’ve told people before on this blog, bulger will be on this team next year and starting whether they like it or not. while is time is limited on the team looking to the future, the team is still his for the time being. i think it would be smart to draft a QB in one of the first three rounds this year, but not with the (likely) top pick, as i agree that should be a big d-lineman.

speaking of receivers though: if you look through the names, the rams are not too bad off for next year now. robinson will be back, avery is set, burton is set, and gibson is now set. the rams could easily have 5-6 pro-level receivers ready to go next year.

by stlcardinalsfang on Oct 21, 2009 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Drafting a WR

Unless the Rams get lucky and find an absolute stud in the later (4-7) rounds, if they want to draft an impact player at the position, they’re going to have to get one in the first three rounds, or trade for a young proven receiver although that will almost never happen.

by jb22 on Oct 21, 2009 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly...

…which is why we need a DT/WR before anything, and we need to draft a QB in round 2 or beyond. I just don’t think any of these guys are worth the top ten yet.

You mean this is a direct contrast to the PD website?

I agree. It’s horrible on those forums. No analytical points of view, just:

“Bulger sucks”
“Long is a bust”
“Smith is a bust”
“Fire Spags”
“Fire Devaney”
“We should have drafted Ryan/Sanchez/Cutler”

It’s endless and sad. We need to focus on this team going forward. Go RAMS!!!

How about Null?

Bulger is serviceable but I’m getting a little impatient with our seasons of losing records. I’d like to see Null get sometime at some point, or at least hear some word on the kid. If he really isn’t any good I’d say QB would be the right pick for this draft. This upcoming draft class seems a little deep in DE/DT and I think you can get good value later on (J.Worilds, Oghobasse, etc) but the QB’s and WR’s seem to split into first round and fourth round guys. I think Locker is a first round guy, but a late one, and if we’re pickin QB in the first round I gotta go with Bradford/Clausen even though Bradford is damaged goods. But if we go the other way I say WR (Dez Bryant) followed by top DT, followed by top LB, followed by top QB (Probably Lefevour) etc. I have faith (for now) in Spags and Devaney as far as drafts go, I was pissed we got JLaurinaits instead of RMaualuga (I literally fell out of my seat when it happened) but looks like the right call now.

by kinzav29 on Oct 22, 2009 12:00 AM CDT reply actions

I’m interested to see what Null has but I’d like to see DL/WR/LB as the top 3 picks (not necessarily in that order). As is said above, the successful rookie QB’s all have either decent weapons, dominant defenses or both to rely on. At this point Null would have neither and I think he deserves a better chance to show what he’s got than that. At this point only Spags and Billy D know what they have in Null. If they’re sold on him then I say hold him back until next season and get him in as the 2nd string behind Bulger where he should see plenty of playing time for a developing QB. If he progresses, then maybe we can talk about him as a potential starter in his 3rd season

by IrishRamsFan on Oct 22, 2009 5:34 AM CDT up reply actions

I still like Locker

But he was more likeable when he didn’t have so many on his bandwagon. I would have preferred he stay in the 2nd or 3rd round. I will say this. He could start in his rookie season. He’s mobile and tough enough. He’s not taller than Big Ben but he is as good. I like him that much. I too think we need DT, DE or OL more.

by dbcouver on Oct 22, 2009 3:22 AM CDT reply actions

We have to get after the passer on the other team.

It’s ridiculous to just let them stand back there and pick us apart. I would love to see the Rams pick up a good free agent DE, draft Suh, and really get the line going. Then if we could get an outstanding WR, things would start looking up.

I know we wanted them to trade down last year, but you have to have someone willing to trade up that high and pay the huge bonus that takes. I would love to see them trade down in 2010 and pick up another high pick or two, but I just don’t see it happening since there is no real star out there that everyone would want. Given that, I think it’s going to take two more drafts – 2010 and 2011 – before we have enough talent on the team to really make a move in the standings.

Draft QB First Round

I say take Locker, Bradford,or Clausen first round. Bulger is not good any more, hes been losing games and is too fragile. He’s not moving the ball and not making tds.
Then the rams should get a DE in free agent.
Then draft a Offensive Lineman or Widereciever in round two. During the off season the Rams Front Office has some work to do.
