Checking the validity of Steven Jackson trade rumors

With the rebuilding St. Louis Rams struggling, RB Steven Jackson's name is bound to come up in trade rumors today. And a radio station out of Boston got the rumor mill started.

With the Patriots making a slew of moves today, the thinking goes that they're clearing salary space for a big acquisition. That may or may not be true. Radio station WEEI has added Jackson's name to the speculation, the logic being that NE's moves free up the salary space. Jackson, however, requires $5 million plus in cap space, so cutting a veteran here and there isn't going to get the needed room.

This rumor: Fail.

The Rams aren't trading Jackson.

I think it's obvious

where they picked up that rumor.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

That's where I get all my rumors too

Well, and here.

I would trade Jackson

for the right package this offseason. He takes a beating, and it’s hard to say how many good years he has left – though he probably has 3-4 years as a top of the line RB left.

Would you trade him for the following:

1st, 3rd, 5th in 2010 draft
1st in 2011 draft
2nd in 2012 draft

Maybe he’s not worth that much, I don’t know. He’s not a franchise QB. He probably has less value than Jay Cutler did in trade. I would trade him for those pieces in heartbeat though. Add those picks to the picks we’ve got, and we can add a lot of talent to the franchise over the next few seasons. Next year we could have two firsts and a very early second. QB, WR, RB, DE, DT – in no particular order come to mind as possible picks. We’d be able to get 3 players out of the best 35 available.

Any thoughts on what Jackson could bring back in trade? Is that too much? Too little? Who are the potential trading partners?

by Toddius on Oct 20, 2009 1:58 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

There's no way in hell they'd get 5 picks for him

Let alone 2 first rounders…..probably not one first rounder.

Possibly, 2 second rounders.

Just to compare him to franchise QBs (and not many really get traded). The Jets gave up a conditional pick (sort of) for Favre. If he played in less than 50% of the Jets snaps, they would give GB a 4th rd pick. If he played in more than 50% of the Jets snaps, they would give GB a 3rd rd pick. Granted, Favre is much older, but he’s also one of the greatest QBs ever to play the game and was coming off a ProBowl season. Also, he had demanded a trade which diminished his value a bit although the Packers could have just ate the contract since they already had made plans to go with Rodgers and had alread drafted the backup QBs.

Anyway, they only got one 3rd round pick for him.

Matt Cassel. Here, the Pats did a little better than the Packers in getting a (one) 2nd round pick for Cassel (which I think was too much). The Chiefs bit on a career year by a guy who had never started a game in his life who was playing in one of the greatest offenses of recent history.

Jay Culter. The Bears gave up an established starting QB (Orton), 2 first round picks (2010, 2011), and a 3rd and a 4th pick. Here, there Bears were desperate to get a franchise QB. Plus, Cutler is only 25 years old, so it kinda made a little sense to gamble that much. Then again, with the Bears WRs, they still need to make some additions.

Anyway, there’s three “franchise” QBs (one of which is one of the greatest QBs ever to live) and the Broncos clearly got a great return. But, I think that’s more out of the ordinary and you’d never see that haul for a RB.

Patriots are very shrewd

Way above the usual NFL team. Can you imagine getting Randy Moss for a 4th rounder?
I thought they overpaid for Wes Welker with a 2nd and 7th but all he’s been is money.

So what's

a reasonable package? I find it hard to believe that he’s not worth a single first round pick to someone (I wouldn’t trade him for a single pick, even a first rounder – but are you sure?)

Moss was coming off a bad year. Cassel isn’t a franchise QB, IMO. Favre is 40 years old and has maybe one season or so. I think Jackson is easily worth more than those players were (based on perceived value), when they were traded.

I’d like to know what a reasonable package is for Jackson. You successfully convinced me that mine was too large – but what’s reasonable? 2 second rounders? A first and a 4th?

by Toddius on Oct 21, 2009 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would think something comparable to what the Rams gave up to get Faulk would be what to expect

A second and a fifth rounder.

I just don’ think you’d be able to get a first rounder for him. While he may be younger than Favre or have a better track record or future than Cassel (and I agree with you totally that he’s not a franchise QB, but he was treated that way), he’s still not a QB and QBs will always command more money and compensation.

Is it right? Maybe….maybe not. But that is the way it is.

Moss.

While Moss was traded the first time for a first round pick (and Napoleon Harris and a 7th rounder) you have to take into consideration who was trading for Moss and why they were doing it.

Never look at anything Oakland does and figure it’s typical. Now, Moss was a superstar (talent and personality). He was (and kinda still is, but NE kinda saps that out of you) a celebrity and was acquired for the sole purpose of making headlines. Al Davis probably would have given up 2 first rounders if Minnesota would have pushed it that far. He’s simply irrational.

A 4th rounder (what NE paid) was probably too low, but as you point out, his trade value was pretty low when that deal occured.

poor guy is at the peak of his career and has nothing to be excited about…Trade him for some draft picks and lets continue this rebuilding process

by adam2588 on Oct 20, 2009 2:30 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

If next year is uncapped ownership would still have to open up their wallet to pay for all those high picks, plus two first round picks in 2011. It’d be nice to have but hard to tell what that might do to the salary situation down the road. Especially with the great track record we have had on draft day. Keep SJax. let Spag and Co. do their thing. I for one think it’ll come around sooner than some people think. GO RAMS!!!

Eagles have confirmed

Trading WR Brandon Gibson and a 5th round pick for Witherspoon. I know y’all got a big WR who we loved in the preseason. He’s buried behind three very good young receivers, the ghost of Kevin Curtis and the inexplicably-still-here Reggie Brown, but the Rams should be very happy with him. But what have we gotten in Witherspoon? Is he a MIKE or a SAM? Can he cover the TE? Please tell me he can cover the TE.

Gibson

From ESPN analysis:

Analysis
Positives: Legitimate NFL size. Good height and has the frame to handle NFL punishment. Has the quickness, bulk and strength to fight through the jam at the line of scrimmage. At least adequate straight-line speed to challenge defenders deep. Can track the ball over either shoulder. Can sink his hips, stick his foot in the ground and explode out his breaks, creating separation against even the best of cornerbacks. Soft hands and can snatch the ball out of the air. Good body control to contort his body and make the tough catch in traffic. Courageous over the middle. Effective red-zone target. Cognizant downfield blocker. Showed good toughness last year fighting through knee and heal injuries. Three-year kick returner.

Negatives: Possesses good, not great deep speed. Demonstrates good overall athleticism, but doesn’t consistently produce yards after the catch. Struggled with drops during Senior Bowl practices. Marginal elusiveness in the open field. Experienced kick returner, but not necessarily a candidate to do so at the next level. Plagued by a knee and heal injuries in 2007.

If we nail that 5th rounder

It will pay off. If we don’t it won’t. Spoon was worth more. Our LBs were improved with his move to the weakside. He was 30 though, and I speak not knowing of his cap hit, or Gibsons, for that matter.

i think the trade was good, Will was a 8 yr vet so really how many more years at top level would he have given us? We got a good WR wich is one of our most needed spots, and hes very young and with a huge upside polus we got a fifth rounder, so if we could get someone to the draft for us that knows how to do it then this trade works for us big time i say

How do you know we whiffed?

Has anyone here actually seen Gibson play? Philly fans are saying nothing but good things about him and that he was simply buried on a team deep in WR’s, like budding star DeSean Jackson andJeremy Maclin who they took #19 overall.
