Any Positives out there Rams fans?
Hey guys I go as Livemaxxx and I need a favor. I do a weekly post on Stampedeblue, where I analyze a teams strength's and weaknesses. I try to be fair and add a little humor to it. I do this post against weekly Colt opponents and we have you guys next week! To be honest I'm having a hard time picking anything good to say about the Rams. All I have so far is Steven Jackson. Is there anyone else you guys have on the Rams that can pose a threat worthy to write about?
Please Comment all you want, since I will be checking to see your answers.

well if you watch this week's game you'll have plenty of positives to take away
but i’ll give this a shot anyway.
1. as you stated, steven jackson has been a beast. he’s fourth in the league in rushing, and has done almost all of his work after contact playing behind a poor offensive line at times. he hasn’t done much in terms of receiving this year, but that can be attributed to a number of things, but mostly the rams lack of passing offense this year.
2. the defense as a unit is playing decently. you may not notice because of the final scores (which often include many points that had nothing to do with the defense), but they really are. the rankings somewhat suggest otherwise, but that’s because of points given up in garbage time when the defense has lost passion. run defense has been especially good.
3. speaking of defense, rams second round pick and middle linebacker james laurinaitis is a stud. the dude has been in on tackles all year, and continues to get better. he is going to be a real star in this league for years to come.
4. punter donnie jones. i know i’m reaching here, but he absolutely the best punter in the league hands down.
5. richie incognito has finally got his head on straight the past four weeks and really become the best offensive lineman on the team. we always knew he was a good blocker, but it’s the stupid penalties that always had us calling for his head. coach spags seems to have sent him a message, and he has really played his ass off the past four weeks. alex barron showed signs of the same type of turnaround last week, we’ll see if that continues.
6. the play of the #2 and 3 tight ends has been somewhat encouraging. daniel fells has a couple decent catches for TDs and been laying some good blocks.
overall, the team continues to get better. i know it’s hard for people on the outside to notice this, but it really is true. the final scores don’t always show it, but the rams are inching closer and closer to their first victory and just may get it this week.

+1
Our recievers, while still not big names, are starting to pick up the slack. The playbook is being opened up, and hopefully that will continue as the year goes on to free up defenders from the box for Jackson to run through. Avery and Burton seem to be doing better as time goes on, and Amendola looks to be a steal for us. A bit of time is still expected for development of our WRs, but they seem to be coming along.
THIS year's the year. I hope....

I have a bit of an issue with your assessment of the defense.
when the defense has lost passion
Can you point this out in a game? When exactly did this defense ever quit playing? Or are you misinterpreting “fatigue” for “effort”?
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

fatigue.....effort.....passion, whatever you want to call it
there’s a point in the game (usually after the rams go down by 3+ TDs) that the defense stops playing as hard as they did in the first half. most of it can probably be chalked up to fatigue because they’re on the field so damn much, but i have a feeling if it was a 17-10 game in the fourth quarter, the defense would play much better than if it was a 35-10 game.
by stlcardinalsfang on Oct 17, 2009 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
One could also make the assumption
that if it were a 17-10 game the defense wouldn’t have been on the field quite as long or had been put into such high stress situations (i.e., starting field position inside the 50 or inside the 20) which causes the D to have to exert more effort while with zero margin for error.
It’s like pitching behind in the count with the bases loaded. You mentally exert more effort whether you want to or not. You also have a tendency to try to make the big play which in turn gives up the big play when you’re either backed up or when you know the best shot at scoring might just be the defense running one back.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
by Tackle Box on Oct 17, 2009 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
oh of course
but the bottom line is, the defense doesn’t play with near as much passion when they’re down by 21 with ten minutes to go in the game, so they’re more likely to give up another touchdown, making the final score more lopsided.

I have never seen so many guys trying to make lemonade out of lemons...
While I appreciate the optimism, it’s totally misplaced. Everybody’s trying to make out like we’ve dramatically improved cause we piled up some offensive yards last week against the Vikes. The facts remain; we were blown out at home 38-10. Our team’s giving up 28+ points per game and scoring around 7. All that’ll do is get us in the record books as the most hapless NFL team to ever play a season. Right now we’re 0-5 with no hint of a team we can beat on the schedule. Our starting QB’s shoulders have been turned to hamburger by age and repeated hits/injuries. Incognito, like a simmering volcano, could erupt again at any time. Barron had one “good” game last week after dozens of lackluster performances. Why does anybody think he can keep up the pretense of actually caring about winning? Jason Smith has yet to show anything in camp or on the field. Jacob Bell took our $$$ and hasn’t even provided mediocre performance. Gibson is out for the year, as is our best receiver; Robinson. Adam Carriker will never play again. Chris Long has 0 sacks through 5 games (that’s the same amount as me). Can you say bust? Little and Hall are almost eligible for social security. Nobody knows what happened to Vic Aydenaju. Boller has shown he’s no better than Frerotte or Trent Green were. Super-star kicker Josh Brown is 2-5 in the FG dept. McMichaels is starting to make, ugh, Joe Klop look good. Avery and Burton are the inconsistent twins – Bruce and Holt, they ain’t. Vobora, who was the weakest link in our LBs, got himself suspended. The bottom line is that this team is bereft of talent with possible exception of SJax, Lauranitis, Donnie Jones, Otogwe, Bartell, Butler, Jason Brown and who else? These few creible guys ain’t enough to win an NFL game. Yecch!

Off Topic
“While I appreciate the optimism, it’s totally misplaced” Where do you reckon is the right place for optimism, ed? OP asked for bright spots, that’s what this thread was supposed to be about. Pessimism is sort of off topic on this one isn’t it?

Coach,
facts are facts, wishes are wishes, dreams are dreams. I had a coach years ago that made the statement; “Wish in one hand, crap in the other, and see which one fills up fastest.” I’m a realist. If there was ANY hint of a reason for optimism, I’d be on onboard. But we’ve got to quit fooling ourselves by taking insignificant events or stats and trying to parlay them into a ray of hope. You, as a coach, should know that you can’t cajole a bad team into winning. They have to be motivated (or mad as hell) and want to hit someone in the mouth. The only other way I know to win an isolated game is to have the other team come in on their worst day, flop around and basically give it to you (that’s what we’ll need to beat Jacksonville). Sorry if I’m off-topic and not optimistic.

Pessimists
always think they’re “realistic”, and they are to a point, they’re just always focused on the negative. Which doesn’t really help much.

In case you haven't noticed...
there’s not alot of activity about the Rams on ESN, SI or anywhere. Nobody’s interested in an 0-16 team. And, as a 40+ year Ram fan, I likely have way more knowledge about them then a wishful thinking clown like you.

sorry i'm not an old fart
but i’ve been a Ram fan since the early 70’s and am not quiet 40 yet, and just because i’m not a douch bag, doesn’t mean i don’t know the facts. i agree, none of the networks talk about the Rams, except to say we’re the worst. that’s why i come here, for the links, the info and good reading. but as a coach, i’ve learned that when trying to better the team you point out the negative, and fix it, praise the good and help it to grow. you don’t keep harping on the negative. that breeds more negative, and anomosity towards the coach and other players. and for your information, i don’t think i live in a world of candy canes and lollypops. i know we’re bad, not the worst, but i feel the coaching staff has our boys moving in the right direction. even at 0-5 (that sucks) but i also don’t need someone yellin in my ear.

I don't think being "54" qualifies as that OLD.
I’m not even 20 years older than Leonard Little. And George Blanda played in the NFL for Oakland till age 48. But, if you need to be a “douche bag” to know your facts, at least start with the correct spelling. :-) Meanwhile, the Ram players and coach need unbridled animosity, mendacity and a swift kick in the butt aimed right at them until they gird up their loins and go out and smash some team in the mouth.

54 is old = P
but you do seem to put a smile on my face. i didn’t know spelling counted here. and i agree, for a professional “whatever” you have to bring the pain. if it’s yours or theirs, you have to bring it.

Right...
but we’ll waste it on another Alex Barron, Tye Hill, Adam Carriker, Chris Long or Jason Smith. No matter who’s doing the choosing, we never pick the best available player, we always try to fill a need and get screwed doing so.

I called Long and Carriker busts long before anybody else would admit it.
Smith had a lousy training camp and just barely beat out Adam Goldberg for the starting role. His first couple games were unremarkable at best. And he quickly succumbed to an injury. Not the best way to start out as an Iron-Man in the NFL. People that think this guy is another Orlando Pace are sadly mistaken. He’s more like another Alex Barron. And, instead, we could’ve taken a best available player with immediate impact like Curry or Sanchez. The 2nd and 3rd rounds of the draft were loaded with offensive lineman about on par with Smith.

If you want to research,
go back to all the posts around and right after the draft where people were lauding this guy as a great impact player. “Our new starting LT.” You may find your own name in some of those comments. But you won’t find mine. Smith got $33M and disappointed throughout training camp being “manhandled” by old goats like Leonard Little. And you know it was down to the wire whether he’d even start at RT and edge out Adam Goldberg. But let’s keep making excuses cause the new front office and coaches couldn’t possibly have made a mistake in drafting Smith #2. I mean, gosh, we’ve got Barron, Smith, Brown, Bell, Incognito, and/or Goldberg up front now – so why can’t we run the ball or pass protect?
by edpjr on Oct 17, 2009 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
saying he's "Our new starting LT"
doesn’t mean he’s the next Orlando Pace, that means he’s better than Barron and at the time Barron was still at RT I believe so he’s also better than no one. Being good enough to start on the Rams does not mean you are as good as Orlando Pace was.
Don't be sorry, be accurate

Ok
there really are not a whole lot of of postives to concern yourself with. However, there are a few. Remember this is an NFL team even though they are doing as poorly as they are.
1st thing to worry about is the Safety tandem of Atogwe and Butler. Although Butler has been sidelined for a while he is getting better and should be healthy by the time we meet up with team Peyton …I mean the colts. The two safeties are our difference makers. Atogwe is a ball hawk and with Butler back helping with the run, it will allow for him to better defend the pass. We all know that against Peyton we will need all the help we can get.
2nd is as before mentioned our recent production of 2nd round pick MLB James L. The kid has been solid, playing the run and the pass effectively. A truely smart player ahead of the curve for his age. A true 3 down LB or in the Rams case 13 down LB. Either way, it should be interesting to see how the young one fares with Peyton and his audibles/Jiberish.
Between the three players mentioned there are some commonalities that make them special. Besides being our leaders defensively, or our most effective/consistent players. These thee encompass the majority of our turnovers. They are somehow always involved in a fumble or fumble recovery or an int.
These guys are the ones that can change the momentum of a game at any given point, but then again so can our entire offense….just in the wrong direction.
PS you guys better have Bob Sanders back because your defense against the rush isn’t really that great. In fact it sucks…like our entire performance come Sundays. Lucky for your guys you have an individual that makes weaknesses disappear.
See you Ponys soon!

There are SOME positives...
I can think of five: Atogwe, Butler, Bartell, Laurinaitis and SJax.
Beyond those 5 PLAYERS, there isn’t much about this TEAM to be excited about, especially given that there are 22 starters on a team. Those stats given by EdP are extremely incriminating and until someone can offer statistical evidence to support a claim of improvement, it’s hard to disagree with him.

are you new to the blog?
Van routinely gives this community “statistical evidence to support a claim of improvement” yet you’d rather look at points allowed (and those cited weren’t even accurate) and stuff like record and opinions as “extremely incriminating”.

What's your excuse and "statistical evidence" today Tackle?
Jax had 33 first downs, we got 13.
They doubled our time of possession.
Jax converted 11 of 16 3rd downs.
Chris Long had 3 tackles in almost 5 qtrs (still zero sacks).
Jax put up 492 yards of offense, we had 260.
We had double the penalty yards, and
despite the Jags trying every way in the world to give us our first win, we’re 0-6 and off to play the Colts.

Not at all new to the blog.
Van does indeed give statistical evidence, and his work is awesome and well though out, and I have told him so. But Van wasn’t the one making any of the claims in this particular posting. And if we are disagreeing on a particular topic and someone points to facts (such as PF and PA) and others don’t refute the facts with opposing ones, then whose argument do you expect me to find more credible?
As for looking at points and records and opinions, let me clarify. In Pop Warner, high school, and collegiate athletics, I look at improvement and couldn’t care less about records and winning percentages because there are other lessons, valuable ones, to be learned, lessons that have nothing to do with winning. But in professional sports, you better believe I’m looking at records; what else matters? We all treasure the team of a decade ago, not because they tried hard or were steadily improving, but because they won – the Super Bowl!
Finally, I understand that stats can be misleading and so I don’t totally rely on them. If we improve, for instance, from 31st to 28th, well don’t expect me to be too excited especially if we’re getting rolled 38-10 at home, are 0-5, and someone posts to the blog asking about team positives; That seems odd to me. Now if that question is asked after today’s game, one in which we score 20 points and lose by three in OT, then for me, that makes more sense.
by victorian on Oct 18, 2009 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
There are always positives
and it doesn’t hurt at all to talk about the positives. If you prefer to only focus on the negative, go ahead, there’s plenty of space here at TST to do so. But, if all you want to do is focus on some vanilla stats that tell you absolutely nothing other than the end result, then there might be better places to discuss those things.
Look, I’m sorry if I offended you. I get that there are people here who only care about the end result and not how we got there and if there are improvements or changes in that path that might lead to a different ending in the future. That requires patience and having a curiosity into where the problem might be.
What does points allowed really tell us? Well, nothing if not given some context, right? Is a defense that gives up four 90 yard drives for 4 touchdowns the same as a defense that is put on the field after a turnover puts the ball inside their 10 yard line 4 times and they give up 4 touchdowns? Of course it’s not. And that’s the point of taking surface stats like Points allowed and record with a grain of salt.
Honestly, we shouldn’t have to give evidence to refute record and points allowed when we talk about this stuff a lot here at TST. Maybe you missed it or prefer to have everything refuted or supported at every turn. At some point, you have to know what is a reliable stat and which stats give you depth as well as those that tell you nothing other than the final outcome (do you really think Spags looks only at the final score and doesn’t try to delve into where the issues really are so those can be fixed?). Otherwise, you’ll have this conversation over and over again.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

And, I surely don’t want to be the guy who appears to jump on every opinion, asking for ironclad proof for every thought. If I appear consistently negative – my bad; perhaps frustration has seeped into the posts.

Ok, this is kind of ridiculous
It really isn’t that hard to find positives for our team:
1)Half of the Defense: Laurinaitis plays well in coverage, is a sure tackler, a sound leader, and is racking up stats. Atogwe looked good in pursuit against AD and showed veteran awareness. Witherspoon hasn’t looked amazing but he remains consistently above average (maybe a stretch). D-line held AD to less than 100 and Dahl was a consistent tackler.
2)Coaching: Play calling last game was pretty sweet on offense, the players were put in good position to score and move the ball but execution got in the way often. Defense wasn’t as good as the offense but it’s tough to hide parts of the defense against a multi-faceted attack like Minnesota’s, although we did get to Favre and keep AD underwraps.
3)Pass attack: Bulger looked good against the second team of the Vikings (it’s something right?). Avery showed remnants of playmaking ability, the TE’s got open often and led to field stretching, and Amendola emerged as a dependable slot guy, which could lead to the opening up of S-Jax’s screen and flat passes.
Since that is done. Edjpr what is with you man. It’s not real hard to do what your doing on these posts. These things you are stating are actively running through fans’ minds. I can do it too. Jags D-line has not faced an O-line like ours, bound to improve their sack numbers/our best player will be dealing with a stout run D/our recievers boast a practice squad player on any other team at #3/we just lost our starting DT with MJD coming through/ Garrad is good enough to take advantage of our corners often/ we could easily go 0-16/ J.Smith has looked bad along with all our draft picks except Laurinaitis and B.Fletcher is serviceable. I’m not trying to be mean, I just think your posts don’t help the discussion, their off topic, obvious, and kinda sad. Makes me sad reading them, not only because the info is blaringly negative and unavoidable but it also signifies the increasingly futile fan base looking to get on the “i told you so” wagon to keep from feeling so dejected every week after a build up of hopes. Hey if you want to save your weekend by being right about your team being bad, thats fine, but don’t ruin other people’s weekends by telling them they have no chance before the games are even played.

James L. had another solid day. Our rookie LB is constantly improving and he has shown his intelligence is beyond the rookie learning curve. It should be nice to see Peyton truely test the young one.
