Better Know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Ask Big Cat Country
What's up Rams fans
I'm John, one of the writers over at Big Cat Country, SBN's Jacksonville Jaguar blog. Last week was ,well, I'll need another shot of vodka before I start thinking about what happened last week. Here is a tidbit you may or may not know, the Jaguars played their first home preseason game against the newly donned St.Louis Rams. I was 7 years old and in section 245 for that game. If you have any questions about the game this week, ask away.

How do you like Torry Holt?
You got a great guy in him and a great football player. Does he still look good?

Torry has been playing well for us so far
Biggest thing is that he’s provided a veteran presence to a very young WR corp
About once a game he’ll flash the player he was in his prime, but he’s mostly an excellent possession receiver now (Still not the worst thing)

what exactly happened last week to make the score so, well, bad?

Sims-Walker's deactivation certainly was a huge monkey wrench
Took out a ton of the offenses playbook between Walker and Mike Thomas. The defense was looking alright until the offense kept going three and out and they got gassed, then Mathis bit horribly on a pump and go, and then the damn breaks

What's the deal with Sims-Walker?
He got suspended before the game yesterday (which was a surprise to this fantasy football guy who had him starting this week).
The explanation was pretty vague. Will this just be a one week thing?

Missed a maeeting, I heard on the radio
Lived in LA during the Rams and Raiders days. Now based in NorCal, I am still a die hard Rams fan and Raiders season ticket holder.

Okay.
What’s the status of the Jags in Jacksonville? I know they have a hard time selling seats, and i think i’ve heard Jacksonville is the smallest tv market (or something like that) in the NFL.
So, is there talk (threats) of moving the team (to LA?) or is all hunky dory down in Big Cat Country?

Filling in for John
I must say, It is a possibility that this team could move; because of the ticketselling problems(which would be a huge blow-becase this thi would be the first team who moved because of that reason; not because of stadium issues since the 50’s)
I’m optimidstic though; if new GM Gene Smith will continue to improve in the way he build the team; The Jags can be a real dominant team with 2-3 years; and that might bring back the fans to the “Jack”
The biggest problems are with the ticketsales is that: a; There some “fans” who started to create excuses for not buying the tickets, b; Jacksonville is the smallest market of the NFL (if we count Milwaukee to the Packers) which was hit hard by the recession; c; The Florida Gators create an atmosphere; that other than a constantly winning team is inexcuseable for some which certanily does’t help…
The luck is that team owner Wayne Weaver do all he can to save and stay the franchise lately
(he even might will draft local hero Tim Tebow; but I’m not looking that a serious option) and because of the new GM, I think if the Jags can survive this year and maybe the next; they will stay in Jacksonville- because the results will come-and then the fans will come back too!
Plus there is a generation who are in their 20’s who look at the Jags as their team, and can buy tickets slowly too.
So yes there are danger signs(the Rams game will be blacked out; 3/3 this year) but I’m optimistic about the future!

You raise an interesting point.
I, in no way, want the Rams to draft Tim Tebow. I think he’ll stink as an NFL QB. But, I think it would be the best pick the Jags could possibly make.
He WILL put asses in the seats in Jacksonville. At least for a season or two and if he (the team) has any type of success in those years, you’re just buying extra time while you try to build (re-build?) the fan base.
Nevertheless, I think a pro team in Jacksonville is going to struggle simply because of the Gators. It’s like trying to compete with USC in So. Cal or with NASCAR in Carolina. It just can’t be done and you have to accept you’ll always be 2nd fiddle unless your team is playing amazingly.
The Rams have the same problem in St. Louis with the Cardinals (and to an extent with the Blues….a much lesser extent). If fans have to chose between the Cardinals and the Rams, most fans in St. Louis are going to go Cardinals. Then you have the Blues. Hockey fans (the one’s who buy season tickets) are a devout and loyal niche crowd. They don’t give up on the Blues and would always put that team number one in their hearts. Also, the Blues have an identity in the city. Something the Rams sort of started to develop, then shit down the drain with the way their front office acted.

I would draft Tebow
In the 3rd-4th round…
but I think someone will pick him in the 1st round. He is I think not fiting in the Jaguars current system; which is a quite big counterpoint to draft someone in the 1st round. (and sadly my team is on big trouble because the past regime ( with then “GM” James “Shack” Harris; who between 2003-2008 just screwed the Jaguars roster ans specially picks-if you see the first rounders; you see an almost full list of busts)
So ticketsales in the one hand; rebuilding roster where Tebow might have no place(specially at QB) in the other. Veeeeery tough call.
And the Gators; yeah they sure doesn’t help of the Jags; but for example if the Jaguars would leave Jacksonville; the 2016 Florida-Georgia game will be the last played at Jacksonville too; because the city have already some problems keeping the stadium at shape! So Gators fans should stop arguing, and start buying tickets; because if the Jags leave; that would be a big blow for them too.
We have one luck, the front office is fixed from this year. The big question will be this: Have GM Gene Smith the time to build a team which can be beat every NFL team, before it is getting too late!

I never realized how similar
the paths of the Jaguars and Rams are. It seems like we both have the same issue (but to different degrees). And now you have Torry Holt.
Btw, I think the guy is a pud. Lots here disagree with me, but I did not like the way he acted the last couple of years. Just my opinion.
Anyway, very interesting take on the current state of the Big Cats.

I hope it will be a good game
And I’m interested to see what torry will do against his formal teammates on Snday. I expect big things from him, if we will passing the ball. (but I have the feeling this sunday will be MJD VS Stephen Jackson Sunday)
