Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

As a fan of this team, I shouldn't do this, but I'm predicting 0-16

The Rams went 3-1 in the preseason. Sadly, the preseason is not the regular season.

In 5 games, the Rams have scored 34 points while allowing 146. They're averaging 6.8 points a game and allowing 29.2 a game. If you look at just the last three games, the Rams have scored 27 and allowed 109 - that's averaging 9 a game and allowing 36.3. OUCH.

This team is a far cry from what they were 10 years ago. This team has five good players - SJax, Atogwe, Brown, Avery and Jones. The lines are awful. The QB situation is horrendous. All around, it's just the ugliest mess in football. 10 years ago, it was The Greatest Show on Turf. Now, it's The Greatest Joke on Turf.

In all honesty, I'd equate this team to being about as bad or worse than the 2008 Lions and 2009 Raiders. All three teams have played like garbage, been outscored by a lot, and don't have much talent.

I don't see a bright future for this team for quite some time. I don't see the team being in STL much longer, and I believe that the one bright spot in this organization's history (while in STL, anyway) will be The Greatest Show on Turf of '99.

I couldn't disagree more

Are you going off of the final scores or the traditional media? Have you watched the games? I don’t see how it’s possible the Rams go 0-16, especially given what I saw today.

I will admit

that I can’t watch the games b/c I live near Detroit. Seeing the scores.

Looking forward to Cardinals baseball in 2010!

I was wondering

I’m not beating you down, but believe me (and pretty much everyone else), the score does not tell the tale.

Agreed

Still, to ignore the details is to ignore what creates “what matters”.

Not always.

When you’re so bad, you might have different goals. Like figuring out how to control Richie Incognito or how to motivate Alex Barron. Maybe like trying to integrate brand new receivers into the offense.

How about building a new defense since the one we had before sucked to high heaven?

There are lots of things right now that mean a whole lot more than the final score. But, in the near future, the score will start to matter since the other goals have been achieved.

Yes but

why are you trying to fix those things?
So you can win.
Why?
Because that’s all that really matters.

But I agree we need the small victories like those, although those victories aren’t as satisfying

If all you look at is the final score

then the Rams have not gotten any better at all this year and that’s not accurate.

1-2 wins probably. If we can cut down on costly turnovers and penalties

We could easily win some games. We just need to have this entire week dedicated to red zone offense and holding on to the ball.

I see the Raiders going 0-16, but not Rams after what I saw today

Lived in LA during the Rams and Raiders days. Now based in NorCal, I am still a die hard Rams fan and Raiders season ticket holder.

Well,

If I were a betting man and had to pick one of those teams to go 0-16, I’d definately pick the Rams as the more likely candidate. I agree though that they probably won’t.

In fact with the Jags getting beat up in Seattle just as bad as we did, maybe next week will be our week as I seem to recall that we play them next. Also with SF on there way to another defeat, we’ll remain just 3 back in the division. A win next week for us and another 49er defeat and we move within two and can start talking playoffs, though it will still be a bit premature to order tickets.

Well

I am a betting man and I will bet anyone here that the Rams win beoffore the Raiders do. I’m a pretty positive guy for the most part, and you will never hear me predict a bad play, let alone losses. That said, I have money confidence the Rans are closer than the Raiders to a W.

the rams will not go winless this year. they compete in their games, and eventually we will pull one out. im notsaying were a good team, bc i dont think we are. but we have enough heart and marginal talent to win atleast one game.

by StLbluesfan43 on Oct 11, 2009 6:44 PM CDT reply actions

no matter how bad we finish the season......

we will still get the second overall pick and blow it.If they would of only done it before the lions made it trendy.

no worries...

they wont be 0-16 once they get butler and jason Smith back besides after today even without Butler or Smith they will when at least a game

how about marc bulger

i liked the call to put him in he did pretty good. I just knew kyle boller wasn’t anywhere near marc bulgers skill set today proved it with that pass/fumble or what ever you want to call it.

I hate to say this...

But the improvements I saw on offense today, it wouldn’t surprise me if we won 2 out of the next 3 before the bye…

Jacksonville W
Indy L
Detroit W

If we are going to win a game or two this year, best shot coming up.

why do you hate to say it?

winning two out of three before the bye would GREATLY inspire the team to a better second half. looking at the schedule, it’s not impossible that the rams could still go 6-10.

by stlcardinalsfang on Oct 12, 2009 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Good point about.

I too am wondering why it’s such a bad thing to see those improvements…….

It's sort of a figure of speech..

Believe me, i’ll throw a party if we go 6-10 LOL

yeah

i agree VT he did have something to prove and played ticked off sometimes a player needs that wake up call. And I tottally agree jacksonville and detroit are both very winnable games lets at least tie last years record. Lets just hope we carry “some” things into next week.

You know the year isn't over.

I’ve been a Ram’s fan for awhile. But I think we’ll be okay. We weren’t expected to be amazing this year. Spag’s has a lot of work to do, but he’s going to stick it out and toughen this team up. I see a difference in St. Louis Ram’s this year than any other year when we struggled. He will turn this team around. So many teams are struggling this year. I wouldn’t be suprised if there was a chase for the playoffs for a shitty team to make it. If not we’ll still end the year with a boost, and we’ll draft and make some more offseason moves next year. We just as fans need to be patient. And btw, they will not go 0-16.

by Xmisto on Oct 12, 2009 5:40 PM CDT reply actions

Totally agree... as crappy as things have been

(and i’ve said this before) at least I feel we’re moving forward. I haven’t been this excited in a long time.

And you’re right, could be another year an 8-8 team makes the playoffs… I believe we were the last ones to do it the year we got toasted by Atlanta (2003?).

Wouldn’t it be something if a 7-9 team made it?

that would be awesome

i mean are division isn’t that great besides san fran they look decent but they can be beat all i want this year is for us to compete and generally translate that into a few wins. Realistically do i see us makeing the playoffs? No but evrey sunday i will always see my rams as the best in the league and never give up hope. And remember quitters never win and this team never does that.

by keeperskillz24 on Oct 13, 2009 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Does that?

“And remember quitters never win and this team never does that.”

Never does what? Quit or win?? hahaha Sorry just being a pain in the butt!

5 more loses for almost certain

I see us losing to Indy, San Fran, New Orleans, Seattle, and Chicago. What I also see is our team starting to gel somewhat. I could see us taking an upset against Jacksonville. We have a decent chance against Detroit. Who knows what will happen with Arizona, if our D holds up and we don’t turn the ball over we might have a chance. The one game that confounds me is the Titans game. The Titans are 0-5?? Really?!

I say we’ll finish with 3 wins. I’ll take a flier on the Jags, we’ll take the Lions, and take one from Arizona. If we beat Houston and finish with 4 wins, considering where we are now, I would buy Coach Spags a cold one and say job well done.

by Brendan W on Oct 14, 2009 1:13 AM CDT reply actions

The Lions, at home in Detroit, will stomp out butts.

And, how’re we gonna take one from the Cards with Warner, Boldin and Fitzgerald racking up 400-500 yards offense. The Cards are the one team that has literally smashed us flat the last two seasons. These other teams have real NFL players.
