Rams vs. Vikings, week 5: Game Thread

St. Louis Rams vs. Minnesota Vikings
Week 5: Sunday, 11 Oct, 2009, 12:00 p.m.
Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, MO
TV: Fox

It's throwback uniform day for the Rams, as they don the yellow and blue to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the '99 Championship team. Ten years. It feels like a decade ago. Oh wait. The Rams are struggling right now and will for the rest of the season, but as maddening as each loss is, there really is cause for optimism. The team is getting young, keystone guys for the important positions that will serve them well in years ahead. That's not to say there isn't a lot of work left to be done, but at least there's something to look forward to on the horizon...if the league doesn't get shut down after next year.

That said, I still want to see this team win this season.

GO RAMS!!!

How can the Rams win?

 - Play mistake free – No turnovers in the first 3 quarters, no drive-ending penalties, no wasted time outs.
 - Special special teams – create solid field position by gaining yards in the return game. Keep the Vikings deep in their end with well angled punts. Make FG attempts.
 - Force Favre to throw – Fill in the box and negate big plays from Adrian Peterson. On 3rd downs, bring heat, cover thick and force Favre to create under pressure from 5 or 6 pass rushers.
 - Take the ball back – A fumble recovery or interception on the Vikings side of the field creates points.

It’s going to be tough, but if we can get 2 of these things done, we’re in the game. Three, and we’re talking upset. One, a respectable loss. None? Tell the wife to take the kids somewhere soundproof.

by 81 Witness on Oct 11, 2009 12:27 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think you can fault him for that call

I think the desired effect was to get the ball to a receiver with a chance to get YAC, but if not, at least you get some yards for the punt. Conservative, yes, but as many mistakes as we make, you have to be more conservative when you’re backed up. He did make that call on the pass to McMichael to open the game, offensively

There was no one

Does Quincy Butler do anything right?

He put himself on my radar a couple weeks ago by kicking that punt into the endzone. Today, he’s got a block in the back penalty and a horse collar penalty.

He will take the roster spot of Tye Hill, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday. Butler is not much of a player.

LOL...

at what point do the players take responsibility for what happens on the field? The same players who turned it over have been reliable for us this year, the coach hasn’t put them in a situation they aren’t prepared for.

by RamsFan1979 on Oct 11, 2009 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I not saying the platers aren't responsible for what they do

I’m saying the coaches have repsonsibility for team turmovers and penalties. Those things are directly related to how they’re coached, and the demand for discipline form the coaches.

Remember When Barron was Benched?

That was the coach influencing a player who was making mistakes. Whether or not it worked or will work in Barron’s particular case is besides the point.

The coaches need to have the same kind of impact in practices, even more so, constantly, in order to reduce player mistakes like penalties and turnovers.

The best coaches have teams that typically don’t kill themselves, and it has a lot to do with the coach’s attention to detail and how they handle mistakes in practice.

Also, teaching good teachnique for ball handling and protection. You might htink because they’re pro’s they know eveyrhting and do everything the right way but that’s not the case. Many seasoned pro’s have fumbling problems, Tiki Barber was one who fumbled constantly until he was finally taught — on the Giants — how to hold the ball the right way.

The more fumbles, the more its the coaches fault. If a team very rarely fumbles, thats on the player. Drilling good teachnique and discipline most definitely will reduce turnovers and penalties

I still say the Raiders are the worst team in the NFL, and I watch them closely every week

Nice to see a positive post.

We’ve just lost again. By all accounts managing to shoot ourselves in the foot along the way as is our fortay at the moment.

But who cares? We knew this season was a dead loss after week one; as far as I’m concerened now the only thing I want us to win is the race to the number 1 draft pick.

We have a good coach, who’s trying to instil the kind of values you want in a team, and things will come good. But we only have one decent player at the moment. This is a huge rebuildiing job. Anyone who’s been a Rams fan for any length of time should be use to losing, but have faith, and when the success comes it will be all the sweeter!
