AFL or CFL

Do NFL teams look at these leagues very much when looking for help in different areas. I noticed an article that talked about the dolphins signing a stud from the CFL named Cameron Wake. Had a ton of sacks. I did some exploring and found an interesting player that might could bolster the rams linebacking core, if not simply make our special teams stronger. His name is Steve Watson. He currently plays in the AFL and has had some pretty outstanding stats. Plus his home is St. Louis. He actually attended Missouri St..  Here is a link to his profile http://www.arenafootball.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=19827&SPID=1550&DB_OEM_ID=3500&ATCLID=1097030&Q_SEASON=2009

I don't know, the dolphins signing that guy got me curious. Let me know what you think.

I don't think the NFL pays much attention to those leagues.

Those leagues are full of guys who didn’t get drafted and couldn’t get signed as a non-drafted free agent. Basically, they’re playing against guys who they are on par with. Sure, there are some exceptions, but they’re so far and few in between. Also, there’s just not enough roster space to go signing these guys when you have to be developing your drafted players and stuff.

Every once in a while you’ll see a guy slip through the cracks. But for every Kurt Warner there’s 10,000 guys who could never make it on an NFL squad. Ever.

i know what your saying, the talent level in the nfl is clearly way higher.
but the cfl still has players worth scouting, and NFL scouts do follow the cfl closely.
cameron wake has been an absolute BEAST in the cfl and i think he can be a nice situational pass rusher for the dolphins at the very least.
the cfl’s wide open passing game has been influential on both the US college and pro game.

The issue I'm having with your list

Is, outside of Garcia, Sellers, and Warner, every guy you’ve listed retired over 10 years ago. That means they played in those leagues at the very least 15 years ago (some more like 30 years ago). I find it hard to give hardly any attention to leagues that simply haven’t produced anything in a decade.

Please.

He played like 2 games and that was because he was suspended from the NFL.

Semi-joking.

But the reason he didn’t play a full season was due to injury.

Did they shut down the AFL?

I can’t remember if that actually ended up happening. If it did, I bet a couple, maybe, of these guys will spend time at an NFL camp.

yeah

they canceled the AFL for at least this season, i don’t think they know if it is permanent. so far just this 2009 season

I got a sport term question.

Is there a difference between a player being cut or released?

I have witnessed time and time again.

by srdmad on Jan 26, 2009 10:41 PM CST reply actions

I think released is when you have a contract signed with the team. Cut is when you’re trying to get a contract, but you get “released.” I’m not positive though

by sergey606 on Jan 27, 2009 2:19 AM CST up reply actions

I think this is it

You get released from the roster but you get cut from the practice squad. Is that clear? I’m not sure it’s even clear to me….

I think if a guy doesn’t impact the salary cap, they’re cut but if they do impact the cap, they’re released. Basically, I don’t think there’s much difference. You’re still out of a job and not getting paid (unless you have guaranteed money coming your way).

Then again, I’ve talked myself into more confusion here, so I’m not sure anymore.

If a person is 6’6" or taller, wears a size XXL shirt, is ranked in the top tier of his position, who likes brownies with ice cream then he is released. If a person is under 6’6", wears a small jersey, sucks at his position, like cinnamon buns with milk then he is cut. Those are the basics….much more detail involved….
