Dude, you're getting a Spagnuolo
Just in. Jim Thomas from the PD is reporting that the Rams will name Steve Spagnuolo as their new head coach before the end of the day.
This is good, no, great news for long suffering Rams fans.
There must have been some ulterior motives behind the Garrett flirtation. Tackle Box suggested the Rams OC position for him. That may be the case, but I suspect it has more to do with, ahem, restructuring the locker room in Dallas.
Wonder why Spags and not Frazier? That's not a complaint, just wondering. What about those reports of Spagnuolo wanting control over the roster? I suspect they were a little over blown, and coming from the NYC media, could have had more to do with the Jets and Brett Favre than anything.
Shit yeah. this is good news. More thoughts on Spagnuolo to come, savoring the moment for now.
Let's open it up for discussion.

Hope it's true
I was frustrated by the apparent flirtation with Garrett, and the distraction of the sudden availability of Gruden. I was afraid the Rams were getting distracted from their original focus in their coaching search, and that their top guy would get away.

BernieM of the PD says that Garrett was: 1. a head fake by Devaney; 2. Plan B in case Spagnuolo said “No.”

I'll believe it ...
when I see him trying on the Rams’ hat in front of the Edward Jones backdrop.

You guys will love him
Spags is a terrific, aggressive coach. The players love him, and he has learned from Andy Reid/Jim Johnson/Tom Coughlin. He should do a great job for you guys.
If you have ?s about him, feel free to ask. I’ll answer what I can.

This announcement works for me.....
Now we gotta hit the trade market as hard as the cap will allow to give Spags something to build on. Maybe the days of a listless defence are past.

The players are gonna Spags as much as we already do
“Having a guy who’s got swagger makes a difference,” Rams linebacker Will Witherspoon added. “A guy who can really get guys motivated is going to be a big key.”

This choice
absolutely thrills me. Best decision they could have made.
The whole Garret thing scared me, but they came through.

This is a great start, but ...
I’m extremely interested in seeing his picks for OC, DC, and Special Teams coaches. I am really excited about the prospects here, but I think we need to temper the expectations for next year some. If this team goes 7-9 next year, I think that has to be considered a win. There are so many holes to fill from a player standpoint, that I would be surprised if they can all be filled in one year. I would expect 2010 to be the year for playoffs.

i think it depends on how bad/good the rest of the NL West will be next year, because it doesn’t take much to win the division. and yes i agree that a 7-9 record would be a win. if the team stays healthy will benefit quite a bit. i doubt rams are going to the playoffs next year, but at least now there’s hope

I agree
Going 7-9 might put the Rams right in contention to win the West.
