Possible Reason for Bulger's benching

I admit that I am an outsider to this blog; I do not follow the rams in any meaningful way.  The news of Bulger being benched seemed strange, all media outlets agree, he is not the problem.  A thought occurred to me and it does sound disturbing and could be viewed as ignorant but; what if Linehan wants to protect his QB from taking any serious hits until he can try to figure out how to make sure he can at least keep his QB relatively health and is using TG to sub in until he is comfortable with the OL protection?

You're not the first to think so...

A few on the board have speculated the same thing. Personally, I don’t agree – I think they’re searching for a comfort level between OC and QB, and hoping to rekindle something between Green and Saunders.

Besides, it would be the height of irresponsibility to be intentionally “protecting” Bulger by throwing an even more fragile quarterback with a serious concussion history into his spot to take the punishment. Even for a team as screwed up as this one, that’s pretty sick.

True but you have to have a QB in there,

you cannot protect your franchise QB and have another who could step in to take some hits. Some also think that this could be an ownership move to protect their main QB or Linehan is just crazy/desperate.

Ignore the Mainstream Media, EMBRACE THE HATE!!!!

Bulger's not right

and i think that stems from the lack of protection, but if you look at him in the games, he’s hurrying himself and ALWAYS throwing off his back foot. THe poor play in-front and around him has caused him to loose his form.

Maybe his wallet is bothering him

Bulger’s 60 games pre-contract extension: QB rating of 91.25

Bulger’s 15 games since then: QB rating of 70.9

Not that he was ever a fiery guy, but judging from post-game interviews, he looks perfectly content to mail it in at this point. Paying him to sit on the bench? Even better.

I've never questioned Marc Bulger's desire to play the game

He’s a quiet guy, so what. He’s also tough as nails and has absolutely gotten his ass kicked for the better part of his career (although it seems to have gotten worse under Linehan and I thought that was impossible after the “no-protection” Martz offense).

Nothin'. A handful of nothin'. You stupid mullet head. He beat you with nothin'. Just like today when he kept comin' back at me......with nothin'.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

But the Martz, we scored.

The offensive machine rolls in Texas.

Yeah, that's a big part of two really big issues

We DON’T score and we DON’T protect the quarterback even though we use more tight ends, running backs and fullbacks than Martz ever dreamed of. Although, I think Martz’ offenses didn’t score quite as much as you might remember, especially the last couple of years.

Martz had just as much trouble in the Red Zone as this outfit does. Of course, Martz could usually get the offense to to Red Zone, but he still couldn’t get the ball in the end zone once he got there.

Don't get me wrong

I’m not a Bulger hater 4 life, one of the old-school Warner hangers-on… but I’m frustrated by Bulger’s lack of growth over the last few years. I’m a quiet guy by nature too, but living has taught me the hard way that not speaking up, or not performing, when you’re called upon to lead will lead to your own ruin. Maybe it’s not his fault — I would have signed that contract, too. And he can’t control who his offensive coordinator is. But I can count on a small number of fingers the number of times I’ve seen him step into a decent throw over the past season and a half.

No one can say for sure what his standing on the team is, but the whole locker room knows how much he’s making now. And they also see the film just like we see. And it’s not unreasonable to expect him to commit to a damn pass pattern every now and again, even if he gets whacked for it.

He's not stepping into throws

because he’s become scared he’s going to get hurt again. I’m not saying this is a good thing, and I don’t think he does it on purpose. I believe it’s a product of continually getting his ass kicked. He’s jumpy even when no one is around him.

To use an example (probably an unfair one, but I’ll give it a go), hunters know the term “gun shy”, which is a label given to a hunting dog who is scared of the sound of a gun. You can fire a gun standing directly over a good hunting dog and they barely flinch, but some dogs will get scared and run. This can either be something their born with or they acquire at some point in their lives and it’s hard to break them of it since it becomes psychological.

I think something similar has happened with Bulger. No matter what he tells us, his coaches, his teammates or himself, he’s scared deep down he’s going to be crushed every single play and he wasn’t like this until last year.

Nothin'. A handful of nothin'. You stupid mullet head. He beat you with nothin'. Just like today when he kept comin' back at me......with nothin'.

Nice metaphor

Although, you almost have to switch it around. Bulger is at the center of everything … it’s as though the hunter himself is the gun-shy one. Doesn’t matter how good the dogs are if the man can’t settle and square on his target.

And it’s symptomatic of the whole team’s play. Linehan’s model has always eschewed risk — which is fine to a point. Limiting turnovers and playing ball control are decent ideas. But increasingly over the past few years, the whole team has played more scared and less aggressively.
