Kiffin won't be fired

Because then, Al Davis would have to pay him his salary. That’s why he’s been pressuring Kiffin to resign, instead. Quoth Ray Ratto

In fact, we’re still not entirely convinced that Davis will fire Kiffin at all this year, just because it is the one thing Kiffin wants most. This has been going on for most of the calendar year — in fact, Davis is quoted as having had buyer’s remorse last August, before Kiffin’s first game, and nothing had happened yet.

But the rules of the death watch have been met. Lots of “insiders” say they’ve “heard” that Davis “might” fire Kiffin sometime soon, which is so vague a rumor that it will be true at some point in the as-yet-undetermined future.

But Al Davis keeps saying

this isn’t the guy he hired. Wtf? If you hired Lane Kiffen, then this IS the guy you hired, you old coot!

Nothin'. A handful of nothin'. You stupid mullet head. He beat you with nothin'. Just like today when he kept comin' back at me......with nothin'.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

I think he thought he was hiring some kid who’d know how to keep his trap shut with the media. He must have known he wasn’t hiring the second coming of John Madden… or John Gruden, for that matter. (Gruden actually stood up to the old man in a productive way, and ran the team to his liking for a couple of years there.)

Traded?

Didn’t Gruden, in essence, get traded to the Buccaneers by Davis?

I know there was some big story with that whole thing.

Yeah, that's exactly what happened

There was a more complicated backstory, where the Bucs ‘tampered’ with him, I think, and had to compensate the Raiders with draft picks, which essentially amounted to a trade. But Al Davis was geting tired of Gruden running ‘his’ team anyway.

Of course, that was the season that Gruden took the Bucs to the Super Bowl against the Raiders, and taught the entire Oakland playbook (… they hadn’t changed any of it… ) to the Bucs defense, standing in as the quarterback in practice sets. If Al Davis could have been killed by his own fury, it would have happened that Sunday.

Uh...

Monte Kiffin is the DC for the Bucs. Lane Kiffin, Monte’s son, is the head coach of the Raiders.
