Draft Watch - O-line watch (Mid-September edition)

After watching the Rams first two games of the season, it seems pretty obvious that we need to bring in some personnel on the O-line.  Free agency is always an option, but it's one the Rams haven't really explored much in recent years.  Yes, I know McMichael and Witherspoon and Bell and Becht, etc., but we don't make a splash in free agency.

With that in mind, I'll run through some of the best linemen in college so we can keep an eye on them throughout the rest of the college season.

O-line prospects after the fold.

Star-divide

Tackles

5-star

1.) Michael Oher, Ole Miss (Sr.) - 6'6", 325 lbs.

2.)  Andre Smith, Alabama (Jr.) - 6'4", 340 lbs.

3.) Eugene Monroe, Virginia (Sr.) - 6'6", 315 lbs.

4-star

4.) Phil Loadholt, Oklahoma (Sr.) - 6'8", 337 lbs.

5.) Alex Boone, Ohio St. (Sr.) - 6'8", 312 lbs.

6.) Jason Smith, Baylor (Sr.) - 6'5", 298 lbs.

7.) Jamon Meredith, S. Carolina (Sr.) - 6'5", 301 lbs.

3-star

8.) Fenuki Tupou, Oregon (Sr.) - 6'6", 322 lbs.

9.) Jason Watkins, Florida (Sr.) - 6'6", 298 lbs.

10.) Ramon Foster, Tennessee (Sr.) - 6'6", 325 lbs.

Guards

5-star

1.) Duke Robinson, Oklahoma (Sr.) - 6'5", 335 lbs.

2.) Herman Johnson, LSU (Sr.) - 6'7", 351 lbs.

4-star

3.) Kraig Urbik, Wisconsin (Sr.) - 6'6", 332 lbs.

4.) Cedric Dockery, Texas (Sr.) - 6'4", 320 lbs.

5.) Tyronne Green, Auburn (Sr.) - 6'2", 309 lbs.

Centers

5-star

1.) Alex Mack, California (Sr.) - 6'4", 316 lbs.

2.) Jonathan Luigs, Arkansas (Sr.) - 6'4", 314 lbs.

3.) Max Unger, Oregon (Sr.) - 6'5", 300 lbs.

4.) Eric Wood, Louisville (Sr.) - 6'4", 309 lbs.

4-star

5.) Brett Helms, LSU (Sr.) - 6'2", 283 lbs.

Obviously, you have to gravitate towards the tackles, and those top three are serious NFL prospects.  Andre Smith, being a junior, has less experience and less field time on which we could judge him, so I guess there's a bit more risk in picking him which is why I had him at #2 behind Oher.

oher

Oher is the star of “The Blind Side” by Michael Lewis.

He would be a perfect top 5 pick as he could play guard for a year until Pace retires.

I've got to see him play

Haven’t caught an Ole Miss game yet. I’m dying to see him at full speed.

I watched him against LSU last year...

manhandled their D-Line. He’s the real deal. Though The Blind Side makes him seem super-human. I for one would like to see him or Tim Tebow in a rams uniform next year. Heck, maybe both.

Of course I'm right... I have a UC education.

no to tebow...thanks though

he’s a college-style QB, he won’t translate to the pros.

Uu, NO to Tebow, YES to Oher

I would like to read The Blind Side. As for Tebow, there is absolutely no way I would support that pick. No amount of financial consideration would possibly sway me. But let’s agree on Oher. A tackle who is being as talked up as he is has to be real.

Oher

Oher is probably the best long term prospect that we could draft but wouldn’t Malcolm Jenkins, Vontae Davis, or James Laurinites help us more in the short run?

by Gnick on Sep 16, 2008 7:52 PM CDT reply actions

That depends on what you believe is best in the short run

What makes Oher a long term prospect? If improving our O-line is the priority (especially if it’s the priority in the short run), wouldn’t drafting an OT be the most helpful in the short run?
As for the three names you listed, Malcolm Jenkins, I might bite on. But Vonte Davis isn’t even a senior. How is he less of a long-term prospect than Oher? As for Laurinaitis, why would we draft a LB?

I'm all for Oher

He’s the s***. Look at his feet and tell me he’s not gifted
