Random Ramsdom, 8/22: Steven Jackson's love

I have to confess something. I've reached that point where I'm thoroughly bored with preseason football. Happens about the same time every year. I understand the St. Louis Rams need their preseason time, especially since Steven Jackson, their offensive capstone, just started practicing a day ago. Still, let's get this thing going.

  • Orlando Pace did injure his shoulder again, the same one as last year, but nothing's torn. It could keep him out of tomorrow's preseason game against the Ravens. Not what you want to read first thing in the a.m.
  • Steven Jackson must be a little sensitive to the fact that the Rams made him the centerpiece of their marketing campaign. More love!
  • There's nobody I'd rather see silence critics than Donnie Avery. He's going to get the chance this weekend, but given the trouble vets are having with the new playbook, I'd be blown away by a rookie that had it dialed in.
  • What do preseason stats really mean?
  • The rejuvenated Rams defense, led by a spry and svelte Leonard Little, should give Troy Smith a proper welcome to the next level.
  • Eugene Parker's other client, BUF OT Jason Peters, has not ended his holdout.
Back at you in a few.

Polls

I was just over at stltoday.com reading the article on SJ and noticed a poll asking what the fans’ reaction will be towards Jackson. Granted these are hardly scientific and barely over 600 had voted, but the strong majority responded they’d boo him out of the dome and I just can’t wrap my mind around that….

He held out to get a long term deal that gave him some guarantees, and was unpleased publically with the way the holdout went. I am just glad it was about a long-term deal and not a trade. That I’d be pissed about, but I have a hard time being made when this was done for a long-term deal everyone wanted.

In the world I see--you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty carpool lane of some abandoned superhighway.

I wouldn't boo . . .

but “a long term deal everyone wanted” is why I was a little upset he held out. He put himself over the team. He had a contract and was refusing to honor that contract till he received a new one. Baring injury, he would have received a new contract next year without putting himself above the team. Football is the worst sport when it comes to contracts and treating the players fair. But the disputes need to occur between the league and the NFLPA, not the player and the team.

i see why people are upset

but you can’t fault Jackson the individual or the Rams in this. as annoying as the holdout was, both sides handled it with class

very true

And that is why I would not boo Jackson. Not to mention that he is a Ram and unless he is not showing the desire I would never show that type of disrespect. Now cursing b/c of a mistake, that is a different story.
