New approaches to old problems

Now here's an interesting approach to brining in a fullback, something we discussed briefly yesterday.

The Eagles, those wacky Eagles, have signed free agent DT Dan Klecko to compete for the fullback job. That's not a typo, which is something of a minor miracle in and of itself for a hunt and peck typist such as myself. Klecko is 5'11" 275 lbs, which would make him a beast of fullback.

Klecko sat out last season after being cut by the Colts. He made his presence known and probably gave someone in Philly the idea when he caught a TD pass in the AFC Championship that put the Colts in the Super Bowl a year ago.

Could this be the WR we've been looking for? The Redskins waived 25-year-old Ole Miss product Mike Espy. Espy was well considered by the Gibbs regime in Washington, but ruptured his patellar tendon in his right knee in training camp last summer, ending his season before it even began. According to reports at Rotoworld, Al Saunders might be interested in giving him a look, if he's healthy, in camp this season. Low risk, potential upside, sounds like a good move to me.

Chillar latest

Maybe he will sign with Rams. St Louis Dispatch reports he will make up his mind today between Rams, Packers, Arizona (dispatch reports Rams offer one year, pack and zona multiyear). Arizona reports the Pack has dropped out. Another Arizona reports they can't sign Chillar because of the fitz situation:

From every indication I've heard, Rams linebacker Brandon Chillar wants to sign with Arizona. But the likelihood of a deal diminishes as every day passes.

It appears that the contract of Larry Fitzgerald has not been finalized. And until that happens, the Cardinals don't have the cap space to sign to Chillar. Already they have had to cut a player, Sean Morey, to make room for the signing of another, long snapper Nathan Hodel.

Morey is expected to re-sign when Fitz's deal is done, but it's a move the club would preferred to have avoided.

I'm not sure what Chillar's options are now. His agent, Brian Mackler, won't name the teams involved, although it's known the Cardinals want to sign Chillar and the Rams want him back. Green Bay has dropped out of the running, as have the Giants.

Chillar, who is from California, would prefer to move West. But he can't wait forever. If another team, the Rams for instance, pressure him for an answer, he might not be able to wait for the Cardinals.

So far, I don't know what's holding up the Fitz deal.
