Got Questions for the Arizona Cardinals?
Hey Turf Show Times,
Cgolden from Revenge of the Birds here, to answer any and all questions that you guys have about the Arizona Cardinals.
I may not be the dali-lama but I'll do my best to shoot it to you straight. So I'm here to answer your questions - and I expect a few ROTB-ers will migrate over to discuss the upcoming Rams/Cardinals game as well. Anything you got, fire away - I'm here to share and learn.
I'm looking forward to an entertaining Cardinals/Rams game this weekend. Should be fun.

I'll be lurking too.
Similar circumstances leading into this match-up for the Cardinals: coming off a disappointing loss to Carolina the first time and getting dressed up as a turkey and sodomized by the Eagles this time. I suspect the Cards are going to be playing angry…Incognito vs. Dockett should only be a two round affair this time!
If you have Leinart questions, check Darren Urban’s article on Matt’s immediate future. Questions about the running game? Check out RotB’s look at the Cardinals’ running game situation.
And since it seems the ‘09 draft is a hot topic in the land of the Rams, if you guys have any hot leads on a TE that can block and catch for next year, pass it along, we’d appreciate the insight. ;-)

those were both good reads. thanks.
as for your TE needs, we’ll trade you one Joe Klopfenstein for Matt Leinert, straight up.

::chuckle::
I think Mr. Bidwell breaks out in hives when someone on the team has a name with “pf” in it.

Clearly the Cardinals are going to be looking forward to this week as a rebound game, and I expect they’ll probably win, though hopefully the Rams have the mustard to make it more competitive. The win would also nearly wrap up the division, making them officially a playoff team. I have to say, better you than Seattle, though not better you than us.
To date it seems the Cardinals have only beaten the teams they’re “supposed to beat,” with one exception — the Dallas game. What did they do right in that game that they haven’t done since, against the Eagles, Giants and Panthers? And is there any reason to expect them to do anything in the playoffs? Or is this looking too far ahead?

Mistakes
I’d like to throw out that a 4-0 Bills team we played in Week 5 wasn’t a team we were expected to beat at the time. The fact the Bills have swallowed their tongues and pooped themselves since then is a different matter.
The Cards were up against Dallas and blew that lead because they couldn’t play the clock to their advantage with a run game. The Cards ultimately won that game because they made fewer mistakes than Dallas. An opening kick-off return to start the game isn’t necessarily a “mistake”…but that initial play was the difference between Dallas’ late rally winning and OT.
Against the Panthers the Cards fell apart on tackling mechanics. Tough physical teams with some swagger will not get bumped out of bounds by half-ass tackling/pushing/name-calling. The Cards played like wusses that week (and again against the Eagles) and lost due to lack of execution. Against the Panthers’ they had a chance to make the game close/winnable but Warner threw an INT that was returned for big yardage and led to a quick score (multiple scores for Philly).
Which leads to the ultimate reason for failure: turnovers. Against better competition the Cards play tighter (in a bad way) than against familiar opponents (NFC West teams). Warner tries to do too much typically which leads to holding on to the ball too long in the pocket (hello sack and stripping of the ball) or throwing the ball into a tight spot (that gets tipped and intercepted).
There are other culprits to blame for the Cardinals’ failures as of late and Special Teams is a big part of it. The Cards lost their ST “stud” against the Rams last time and have been giving up big yards on kick-off returns (problem when you’re scoring all the time) and the punting has been shoddy. A new punter (Aussie Ben Graham) has been plugged into to help one facet but the coverage teams are still a big concern. The running game has also been an issue as detailed in the above link to the RotB site. Penalties have been a trouble that seems to have fixed itself the past two weeks (both losses). Perhaps the Cards need to play “stupid” to win. ::shrugs:: I’m sure Incognito and Dockett will provide some opportunities for the yellow linen to fly.

well said
I’d also throw the defense out there as a possible culprit. They held the Cowboys to 24 points which isn’t great but they’ve only done that three times since that game (@STL, SF and @SEA). On the season, when they’ve held teams to 24 or less, they’re 7-1.
In games against teams that they’re not supposed to beat (WAS, CAR, NYJ, NYG and PHI), they’re allowing 38.8 points a game. Oh and KW has turned the ball over 13 times in those five games.

Playoffs....
Typed myself into senility! The Cardinals opportunity to represent the NFC West deep into the playoffs depends on seeding. The Cards can beat anyone at home with the confidence a (mostly) full stadium of Cardinals fans provides; who that team is will be a factor though.
If the Cards are #4, they’e looking at a Wild Card team that likely has an equal or better record than the Red Birds as the #1 Wild Card team. Most likely that team will be whoever fails to win the NFC South; the Panthers are a known entity and the Cards should be able to handle business but it will be a tough game. The same goes for the Buccaneers. As a #3 seed, the Cards play the #2 Wild Card (Dallas, Washington, Atlanta) which should be a team they can handle well.
I think everyone in RotB and fans of the NFC West hope to see the Cards at #3 so the #1 Wild Card can paste the NFC Norse team. Then they’d face the Giants in the second round and the Cards will travel to a potentially warmer stadium to play for a chance to represent in the NFC Championship game.

I grew up watching the Cardinals in St Louis...
and I have bitter memories of their departure, so, frankly, I’m not a big fan of your team…that said, I am thrilled that Kurt Warner has found a resurgence to his career…no matter what the circumstances of his departure from the Rams, many of us will always remember him as the guy who brought a Super Bowl victory to St. Louis…plus, he is genuinely a good guy in the community…is he and he wife as visible in the Phoenix community as they were in St. Louis?

Kurt is a saint off the field
Always has been, always will be. He’s involved with so many things, I honestly cannot keep track of them all. His website touches upon what he does through his own initiative. He’s very involved in the community in Arizona with the Cardinals. Charity/volunteer opportunities that usually have practice squad guys assigned will have Kurt there leading the charge.
I think I can empathize with your lack of enthusiasm with the Cards leaving for “greener pastures”. Living in NoCal I’ve despised the Raiders doubly…the first time for going to LA and even more so for bringing their pathetic asses back into my TV broadcast sphere. Bastards. ;-)
So were you a Chiefs fan for that seven year drought?

Actually, I was a 49ers fan...
I was fortunate to live in the Bay Area during the last of the Montana and most of the Young years, so they were an easy team to get behind…when the Rams moved to St. Louis, I quickly jumped on that bandwagon.
I feel your pain about the Raiders…they were returning to Oakland about the time I was leaving the Bay Area…I remember the hard sell Al Davis put on the fans to buy the PSL’s…what a despicable man…I wish the Rams were playing them this year…we might actually win that game.

Edge
Short version: what’s the deal with Edgerrin James? Since making Hightower the starting RB, I recall he asked for his release and was not granted it. Is he out of the plans for next season?
What does he expect? What does he have left? Obviously, at 30, he’s on the downhill side of his playing career, but seems like he has enough to be successful in a sharing situation, no?

Edge
I’ve been really hard on Edge, maybe too hard, but it’s clear that he can’t be productive behind this offensive line (then again maybe no one can but that’s a different story). He will be cut in the offseason, I’d bet everything I have and then some on it. Even the guy who runs the official site, who normally won’t make predictions about current players, has come out and said that he’ll be released.
All that being said, I could see him being productive with a team that has a good offensive line and a scheme that fits his running style. I think his days as a ‘feature’ back are over, mainly because he’s lost what little burst he ever had. He doesn’t have the ability to break tackles anymore but he is a master at finding the tiniest hole and plunging ahead for two yards. I know we’ve talked about it at ROTB and could see him going back to Indy or even Denver (both teams with good lines and a zone blocking scheme).

I could see him fitting in with the Redskins, too, as a guy who could spell Clinton Portis on short yardage.
I’m curious, is Edgerrin a better pass-blocker or blitz-picker-upper than the two younger guys? It seems like Warner has gotten beat up a lot more in the last four games, with him out of the lineup.

yea Edge is the best guy on the roster for blitz pickups
the inherent problem with that though is that he’s also the last guy you want catching a dump off pass on 3rd and 12.
