Week 15 Seattle Seahawks at St. Louis Rams, Dec 14, 2008: Game Thread
Seattle Seahawks at St. Louis Rams, Dec 14, 2008 12:00 PM CST
This is probably the Rams most winnable game, in terms of the on-paper matchup, remaining this season.
You may have to listen to it on the radio though, since it's blacked out.
We'll be here throughout the game. If you are seeing it on TV, keep us posted.
Go Rams!

I should have it
on DirecTV Sunday Ticket. I’ll do my game thread thing to keep everyone informed. Just so we’re all on the same page, we do want to lose this in a good way right? The loss puts us in great draft position and maybe give us something to build on with some solid individual performances. Two sacks by Chris Long? INT by Bartell or Atogwe? O-line performance? Consistency from Bulger? Some interesting storylines to watch today. Some crappy teams to watch, too….

BTW
Tried to sign up over at the Seahawks’ SBNation blog, Field Gulls, but they have a grace period after you sign up where you can’t post so I couldn’t get a Q&A going with them. I’ve already signed up for Niners Nation so I’ll holler at them around Thursday or so.

A familiar start
Stanley runs straight ahead into 3 tacklers. No cuts, no moves, just sprints straight ahead into coverage.

Darby with a great run
A nice play call. Fake run to Jackson, pitch to Darby, he makes a shoulder juke and picks up a 1st. Great call, great run.

TD Torry!
Well, that was a hell of an opening drive. Solid productivity, capped off by a vintage play. Bulger pump faked the screen to Jackson and let it fly for Torry who hauled it in for an opening possession TD. The first game I’ve wanted us to lose all year and we start off with a TD. What a season.

Tough play to start
Defense has looked solid through 4 plays. The first down came with heavy pressure and Seneca Wallace was able to find his TE downfield.

I’m watching on Yahoo Stattracker, so statistically it looks like we’re playing a hell of a game. Well except for the rushing. How does the play selection look today? Hopefully their wearing the Seattle line down so Jackson will get some decent runs later.

Selection has been great
We’ve been efficent on offense and aggressive on D. The 3rd down play hurt, but the call was right. I would disagree with the rushing. We’ve been rushing well, I think. We’ve just been more conservative with the run.

Draft watch
Detroit (0 wins) – losing 7-3 vs. Indy
Cincy (1 win) – winning 14-0 vs. Washington (!)
Kansas City (2 wins) – winning 7-0 vs. San Diego

He completed several passes downfield while running for his life. However, the Pats aren’t particularly fast. Credit our guys for having an extra step, perhaps?

Not every down, but apparently multiple times through the game today, they’ve been running a 3-4, with Long, Ryan or Adenyaju, and Carriker on the line, and four LBs. Not sure where Craft is lining up from, but he’s getting into the backfield a lot.

Bulger's been smart with the ball
Only disappointments have been when he’s had time and overthrown. He’s done a good job of spreading the ball around and the playcalling has been much better. Of course, when you’re running the ball as well as Jackson did in the 1st half, it makes it much easier to get the passing game going

by VanRam on Dec 14, 2008 2:21 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
he's also been able to stretch the field
which is important. If he plays like he does against Miami, where he’s accurate but only throws short, the defense can still stack the box with no penalty. But the long throws – like the 31-yarder to Holt – legitimately open up the defense.

I think I agree with the radio guys … as good a first half as we had, we didn’t score nearly enough points.
That said, I think the defense ran out of gas a bit in the second half … or, the defensive play-calling got stale. It seemed as though Seattle was picking up our attempted blitzes a lot better, countering with runs or deep passes to isolated defenders.
On offense, clearly we didn’t get the ball to SJ enough … I would have liked to see him catch a few balls in space. A couple of missed plays by receivers – Darby, Avery droped balls, Becht running patterns too short, we lost our third-down mojo.

the draft position is worth a lot more than the win would have. If we decide to trade down as some have suggested, we should be able to get a nicer package for #2 than 5 or 6.
by WestCoastBuc on Dec 14, 2008 3:16 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Exactly.
Especially with the value of the top 4. Stafford, Bradford, Smith, and Crabtree will probably be the top 4 which gives two teams a franchise QB, one gets a Pro-Bowl caliber OT and one gets the best WR in college football (assuming they all declare for the draft since none of them are seniors).

So does anybody know how
the tie break works for draft order?
by WestCoastBuc on Dec 14, 2008 3:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Here is a breakdown
• Strength of schedule for the previous season is the first tie-breaker for teams with the same winning percentage.
• Divisional and conference records are the next step in the tie-breaking procedure.
• As a last resort, a coin toss is used to determine the order of selection for teams with the same winning percentage.
• If a playoff and non-playoff team end the season with the same winning percentage, the non-playoff team selects before the playoff team regardless of strength of schedule.
by Option27 on Dec 14, 2008 3:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Or this is a better explanation
Draft positions are determined by record, the team with the worst record during the regular season picks first and so on. If two teams have the same record, the strength of schedule tie-breaker is used which is the combined winning percentage of all teams on each team’s schedule for the current season. If teams are still tied after strength of schedule has been applied, the division or conference tie breakers are used. If teams are still tied after applying all tiebreakers or if two teams are tied that are in different conferences, a coin toss after the season will determnined which team gets priority.
by Option27 on Dec 14, 2008 3:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks
I assume that strength of schedule works in reverse then with the team with the weaker schedule drafting 1st. I’m not sure if we would beat KC on that one or not.
