Bye Bye Butler

You've heard by now that the Rams have parted ways with Jerametrius Butler.

Meh.

The Rams just didn't need him - and definitely didn't need to take on his $2 million salary. It seems that the Rams have some pretty solid depth in the defensive backfield now, with lots of talent in Hill, Atogwe, Brown and the additions of thrid round pick Johnathan Wade at CB and free agent pick up Todd Johnson at S. Chavous is getting a little long in the tooth, but he's solid enough and, just as importantly, plays every game.

With that, I'm completely mystified by the statement Doug Farrarr from Football Outsiders made in an interview at Niners Nation in which he called the Rams secondary a "horror movie." Does anyone else get where he's coming from?

I must say, you're doing a fine job.

Despite lack of responses here, you still stick with it and give some great in depth views on the Rams. Keep it up, cause you're doin' well.

thanks
thanks Option27. football season's right around the corner, and I really think with the Rams looking to be better, fans will come out of the woodwork.

No problem
I'm sure once they do well, people will crawl outta the Cardinal hangover they've had for so long.

But I gotta add my two cents here...
Reading that article kinda scared me. I love what the Rams are doing and the direction they're moving in. But it sounds as if they're putting too much pressure on the defensive line's rooks. I mean, I believe they'll turn out well in time, but how many times do rookies come in a turn things around on the line?

They need to sign at least one veteran NT just to show the youngsters the ropes, if anything.

Don't forget
About Bartell and Alston either. What do you expect from a secondary with the atrocious defensive line we've had. Van, you should put together a piece on why the Rams defense has faltered over the past 5 years. Items to note:

The 2001 draft failures
Kennedy
Matching Butler's offer sheet from Washington
T.Fish injuries
The Claiborne/Coakley debacle
Seattle overpaying every DLineman they could
McLeon & Bly signings

oh well
hope he works out for you better than archuleta

by 636thestruggle on Jun 7, 2007 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

He probably won't make the final roster
though he's already turned out better than Archuleta, since he signed a 1-year 595K deal; league minimum.

We keep 5 CBs, and they are:

Shawn Springs
Fred Smoot
Carlos Rogers
David Macklin

with Butler battling for the final spot with Ade Jimoh, who is a special teams standout. I think he'll ultimately make the roster, though he's got a ways to go.

anybody know
what the deal is with possibly picking up culpepper? nfl.com says that the rams are a "possibility" http://nfl.com/nflnetwork/story/10216133

by kevinramsfan on Jun 7, 2007 4:55 PM CDT reply actions

I have no idea why they would trade for him
They've already got a good backup in Frerotte and besides they'd have to trade a stinkin' draft pick for that guy.

And would he even be satisfied being a backup?

Whatever, I got no use for him.

I agree
provided we lock up bulger, there is no need to waste even as low as a 6th rounder for this guy (even though i think the dolphins are going to straight release him)

Culpepper
there's some bad rumors out there. remember the one that had the Rams ready to part ways with Bulger....
